Today, players are young professional men who will go where they get paid best, and where they can further their careers. Nearly all the players named on here are with top clubs, on a good screw, and can't much improve their career prospects elsewhere.

The best illustration of today's player I know is Kevin Phillips. In his book, he describes the time he was heading for new contract negotiations. He scored at the SoL, and he looked around the fine stadium and heard the crowd singing his name, and thought 'I don't want to leave here. But I've got a young family and have to think about that.' He was flattered that two big London clubs were in for him, and wavered. The following week, Murray and Reid offered him £6.5m over 5 years, and he got his mobile out and told the wife 'We're staying'. Kev is a player we all on here love to bits, but if we hadn't offered the right money, he would have left us. That's today's player.

Bent, Cana, Henderson, Gyan? I thank them all for the good work they did here, and wish them all the very best for the future. They just did what any other ambitious young man (or woman) today would have done. I understand the disappointment on here (I was absolutely gutted to lose Bent). But I don't understand the bitterness, and the 'hope he breaks his leg' mentality. Expecting loyalty is living in the past.

Is this the same Alan Shearer who had a clause in his contract to ensure he was the highest paid player at Newcastle?

And Also the same Alan Shearer who threatened the FA with quitting the international game if banned for intentionally kicking someone in the head - he obviously only makes the right headlines and wasn't in it for the money!!

Steven Taylor. I'd say Shola but there is difference between not turning down moves, and never actually being approached!

When your that good, you should be the highest paid player. And if you have that much power why not demand the charges dropped? I would for sure. It was only Neil Lennon anyway, he was a prize tit. Doubting Shearers commitment and love is folly. He did his talking by playing out of his skin for club and country. Week in, week out.

The money I'll let him off with (although it shouldn't matter what the club pay other players if the money doesn't matter to you) but the "staying out of the press for the wrong reasons" is completely different - Shearers actions could have seriously injured Neil Lennon - easily blinded him or fractured skull - just because Lennon is a tit doesn't make any difference - I rate Shearer very highly but I don't think that what happened with this was "good press" particularly - how would you feel if Joey Barton had punched Steven taylor last night then demanded that the FA dropped the charge (Saylor is a tit as well - I've met him and he's a tit) because Barton appealed it - same principle - different players - get the glasses off.

Scholes is about the only one I can think of who fits all of the criteria

Hahahaha. Er blinded or fractured skull, we'll agree to disagree. You do realise that Lennon has said it didn't hurt at all and he barely caught him? Martin O'Neill was more bothered because he had a little bruise and cut. Lennon actually gave evidence in his defence which was the main reason Shearer was let off. He was adjudged to have been trying to free himself which Lennon admitted forcing him to do by tugging his shirt and trapping his other leg. Whether you believe it or not is not really relevant, lets not dress it up as we see fit looking back though! To be honest you'd do really well to fracture a skull by stamping on someone, let alone tapping them on the head.

I'll have to say, get your own glasses off.

I've also met Steven Taylor and had a different experience. Seemed a genuinely nice fella with no airs or graces. He's a tit on the pitch but I don't mind that. Also have a relative who works at the ground who says he's a lovely fella. Rushes to hold doors open for the staff, always says hello, genuinely polite. Unlike some of the ungrateful ****s like Martins etc who were just rude. All depends when you catch them I suppose. If Barton had swung his leg at Taylor a la Shearer, it wouldn't have bothered me a jot if nothing was done. Whining after the game is for bitches unless its serious, what happens on the field stays there as far as I'm, concerned.

Scholes - Yeah even though he did refuse to play in a carling cup game he thought was beneath him.

Steve Bull, could have left Wolves many times but stayed loyal and genuinely played for the shirt.
