A very amusing read http://forum.charltonlife.com/discussion/53992/how-many-times-have-you-seen-us-beat-the-spanners
I cant speak for all that are not going, but there are several reasons they could choose from. For a start, i think a lot of people are still angry with the board not putting up a fight about the awful policing situation last season. Some will be annoyed with watching dross football (i cant blame them) and some might just not want to spend the little desposable income they have on such a stressful fixture. I did not renew my season tickets this year because of 2 major reasons. Firstly for me and the missus it is almost a grand before you even account for travel and food. Secondly, i said half way through last season i could see this coming. I told everyone we would let a load of players go, not replace them and not strengthen the squads core either. I couldn't justify seriously skinting myself out when i feel cheated by a board who promise things they do not deliver. I had been planning on going to most games if i could afford to at the time, but Millwall i would have steered clear from anyway. If i could go to the Millwall game safe in the knowledge that both clubs and the Met could arrange it so we are not penned in like animals for prolonged periods of time to combat "hooliganism" that is only an issue in a minority of fans from the opposing team i would expect a much bigger crowd. Sadly our record with doi g what is right for ourselves and our fans is poor at best. Still annoys me we were asked not to go onto the Pitch and celebrate the title win when we should have been encouraged to go and show how good a day that was to be a Charlton fan
Policing arrangements have gone from one extreme to the other this season...they are letting us out the same time as the Millwall fans. It will be interesting in Floyd Road after the game. God knows what Einstein at CAFC thought that one up.
Only one point gained since the original post from Watford, Huddersfield, and Millwall. Hopefully the owners have reflected over night and accepted the evidence of what we all saw yesterday, that Powell is going backwards fast with these players. Jiminez knows Gus Poyet (who lives locally) and Poyet is available, has family ties to the club, a proven track record, and plays good football. No witless hoof ball under Gus.
Not one man at all. You obviously weren't in the Covered End yesterday. Why do you think less than 10,000 Charlton fans turned up for the derby if the football under CP is so great ?
No I was in my seat in the North west where there were people who voiced disappointment at losing to Millwall. It was an emotional game where some people got annoyed with the performance on the field. Looking at CP I don't think he was amused by it either. I don't see a lot of people on here calling for CP's head. the 10k people figure can be put down to a lot of things, Sky broadcasting live (always dents the figures) the 12.15 kick off and the way we were treated last year in the same fixture.
Reading and Palace both had poor starts to their seasons they got promoted out of this league, Reading going on to win 46 out of the last 51 available points (17 games for those like me who are poor at maths). I'm not panicking, and even if we went into the relegation zone I won't be worried until december kinda time.
They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I honestly question whether I have been watching the same team in recent weeks as some of you ? Losing to Millwall is not a great surprise when you are a Charlton fan BUT ...what about the manner of that defeat yesterday. Fans of other clubs are laughing at us. Our style of football was terrible, the tactics were hopeless bordering non existent. Please tell me how on earth this manager can turn this group of players around, accepting that the owners have no money. And please don't come back with 'he did it before'. He didn't.
Another factual error from you Vol. He did. We went through the whole of December last year without winning, then went on a really good run in January. Then, later in the season, we were on a bad run and 2-0 down at home to Bolton before we turned it round and won 6 of our last 8 games, drawing the other 2. I agree that all is not well at the moment. But Powell's past record suggests he can turn it round, and I think he will.
God remember the performances against Burnley and Nottingham Forest at home last year? and then the performances against Bolton, Leeds, Wolves, BARNSLEY?? (they were all after a Millwall defeat as well)
why do you think he will ? when I was 18 I pulled a girl with long blond hair and a 44D chest. I don't expect to ever do it again.
That's a rubbish analogy and you know it. Powell has not changed like you have over the years. I'm going on his past record to explain why I think he will. He hasn't become a worse manager since then.
@ Captain Fair enough. Lets drop it and speak again after the Burnley game. CP has got a whole week to review the DVD, talk to the players, and start to put things right on the training ground. Millwall at home means a lot to the hardcore fans...certainly more than it appeared to mean to our players yesterday. I hate losing in that manner to that mob.
At a recent event at Sparrows Lane CP was asked about his contract, and said that he wanted to get the players' contracts sorted before his own. Doesn't this in itself encourage speculation about his future? And his commitment? Remember that Curbs left with a year of his contract to run, because he thought that was the right thing to do. Before I read about CP saying this I assumed that the club had not offered him a contract, but it appears to me now that it is the manager who is hedging his bets. I assume that this is because he feels the job may be beyond him depending on how the players' contract negotiations go. Could it be that this is undermining his effectiveness in maintaining the team spirit we rely on so much?
