Russia had no obligation to enter the war until itself was attacked. Still, despite being in the war for a much shorter span of time they still managed to inflict several times more damage to the german war machine than the western allies. Engagements on the western front like Normandy and Market Garden were tea picnics compared to eastern battles such as Stalingrad and Kursk.

Regardless of the ins and outs of the start of the conflict, the answer to 'Who won it?' is undoubtedly Russia.

No, the Eastern front accounted for:

c. 80% of Whermacht casualties;
around 2/3's of lost Luftwaffe planes;
again, between 66 - 75% of German armour and mechanised capabilities

So while you may complain about Russia not getting involved soon enough (which they had no obligation to do), just be thankful that Hitler ensured they did otherwise the much lauded Battle of Britain would now be an almost forgotten about effort of futility.

 

Why would he. Stalin had just purged his officers and knew at that time the Soviet Union was not prepared for a large scale war. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but at that time there was no obligation for them to get involved until Germany's aggression was brought to bear on them
