How do you solve a problem like Lamela?

Give him some games, our other wingers haven't been amazing so it's not like he would be taking the place of an in form player.
Well it's no use loaning him out to a foreign league - he's already shown that he can handle Serie A. And in turn we've found out that being able to handle Serie says little about how you handle the EPL.

Selling him would be short-sighted IMO and I'm someone who has really struggled to see, right from his first game, why we paid 30m for him (or was it actually 15m and the rest add-ons?). But if you ignore the price tag you have to admit that there must be some sort of player there. He's still so young and we would be shooting ourselves in the foot to not at least see a lot more of him before deciding he can't hack it.
TBH some of his passing was SO awful in his first few games that you have to conclude that he was nervous as hell, confused, just not comfortable in any way. the AVB effect, as players call it.
I think we have to be patient with him. However, whose bright idea was it to spend our record transfer fee on a kid who we would have to be patient with? Absolutely shocking and yet another reminder that our summer upheaval was far more of a cock-up than the transfer-happy among us could see at the time.
(I'll just smugly remind everyone that even in the summer I was warning people not to expect even half of our signings to work out. I wish that my being right was not in perfect indirect proportion with things going well for Spurs but hey - since we sacked Redknapp the smart money was never on "onwards and upwards". At least I slagged off Paulinho at just the right time in the match thread on Staurday).

One possible conclusion is that starting with half a new team is more of a problem than many anticipated. Integrating one or two or three players into an established team is one thing, trying to establish a team while integrating players into it is liable to drive everyone half crazy. As far as I'm concerned, it's a great time to panic. How good the new players are remains a little hazy.
I'm not worried about Lamela. Not yet, anyway. I think it's worth trying him in the Europa and as a late sub, maybe both on the right and behind the striker. Is it really a non-starter to try a left-footer on the left? Because that looks like our least settled spot right now.

Usually foreign players which come here with expensive price tags and don't Intially settle, never settle, it's rare for a player to eventually find his way and that's my concern.
There are examples like Pires who wasn't a world better Intially but played near to 50 games in his first season. Then you have players like Anderson who each year have been saying ' this could be my year'.
Whatever way Lamela is going, he simply has to be playing every week, just like Soldado and then come the end of the season you know where each player stands or if they actually have potential.
You could play him in the Europa league but that's not going to help him settle as he's already proved himself in Italian football so his ability to perform against European opposition isn't in question. It's all to do with the pace and physical nature of our league.
Plus he speaks no English, can't integrate with team mates, will hate the weather and I suspect misses life in Rome.
All in all its looking a complete disaster and Baldini should be sacked if he was behind us paying 65 million on Lamela, Chadli and Soldado as while Bobby and Lamela have talent, they where over priced and I don't want a Dof at the club who over values players as it puts too much pressure on them to settle.

QPR/other Championship club loan. He needs to toughen up and a year in the Championship would do him good.
The very idea that our RECORD SIGNING needs a year in the Championship before he's ready - that this is even being considered by some fans is just very, very damning.

Play him and if he's useless stick him in the reserves and sell him in the summer unless we get a new manager that wants to keep him. Don't play him left wing though and don't play him on the right wing unless Townsend's on the left and probably just actually play him off the striker and let him enjoy the extra space you get playing in a side has license to counterattack.
On what basis is he no good? He has hardly played, has been out injured and on a couple of occasions has started to look the part. Just pick him put him on the left and he and Lennin can switch about like Lennon and Bale did. He has to be better than Bentley so let's give the lad a chance.
Yeah literally just checked myself, I know he had his faults and didn't make the grade here but he's still a talented footballer when he wants to be. Surprised no bottom half side or top half Championship team have snapped him up.
Ego won't allow him to do that maybe? Wage demands? If he's self-inflicted his retirement from football at the age of 29 then he is a silly, silly boy because as you say he's a talented guy.
Lamela needs games, but he doesn't seem to be available at the moment. Townsend's back in training, but still no sign of the Argentinian.
I was thinking his ego/ wage demands could be a problem. Though I suppose on the wages he's been on with us, Blackburn and Arsenal, retiring at 29 is no problem for him providing he's pissed his money up the wall.

Regarding Lamela, the lad merely needs the manager to believe in him and to give him a run of games. He's received too many plaudits from reliable sources to be considered a flop this early.
