Pembs - Suarez DID NOT have a £40M release clause in his contract - that was a big misunderstanding on his part and on Arsenal's part at the time. The wording of his contract allowed him to talk to another club if a £40M offer was made, but it only obligated Liverpool to "enter talks in good faith" with the offering club - they were not obliged to accept the offer. Liverpool could stick out for whatever they wanted, but realistically would probably sold him on at the time for a higher figure if Arsenal had pushed the boat out beyond their record fee. It all depends upon the wording of the contract. In a true buyout (release) clause which means just that, a figure is set that if triggered, enables a player to decide his own future - Suarez did not have that. Now just what's written in Bony's contract would be very interesting and I expect we're about to find out if as reported, Huw has refused to accept £19M. Maybe the same sort of wording?
