Hey guys

Sorry if this has been done before but I am fairly new to this site (although I was a big follower of the BBC 606 site but don't think I ever posted).

My question is how did you start supporting Spurs?

My story is that I started supporting them by accident in the 1980s. Allow me to explain...

My dad never liked sport so I was pretty much isolated from any sport when I was growing up until I got to a certain age at school when all my mates were getting in to football and choosing (or had already chosen) teams to support. This held absolutely no interest to me.

When I was about 13, names like Nike, Adidas, Puma, etc. were suddenly becoming very important. If you weren't wearing that stuff you were a loser. I found myself at a jumble sale (for reasons I cannot recall now) and distinctly remember searching through some clothes and finding a white top with "Le Coq Sportif" written on it. After acquiring this item for about 10p I then proceeded to wear it to PE the next day thinking I was so cool to have such a branded top. I had no idea this was a football top let alone a Spurs top so the piss taking I got was horrendous.

Outside of PE, I sat next to 2 guys in my history class; one a Man U fan the other a goon. They ripped the piss every week because of the top I wore, although once in a while they would not say anything. This made me curious so I started checking the football scores on the ceefax and discovered that when Spurs lost they would take the piss but when Spurs won (particularly if their teams did not get a result) they would keep quiet. Although back in the mid to late 80s Spurs did not seem to win very often. This got me into checking up on every Spurs game and I became familiar with the players and the results and started to get in to the banter with the guys in my history class.

A few years later a game called Kick Off came out for my Atari ST which all my mates were playing and it was addictive as hell so I always chose to be Spurs, which triggered a following of the Spurs which has spanned 4 decades so far (80s, 90s, 00s, 10s).

My first game was 1992 at the Lane against Everton, Gary Lineker's last game for Spurs, 3-0 at half time. Kind of set me up for supporting Spurs as the game finished 3-3 Lol

Uncle's and Auntie on my mum's side are massive Spurs fans so it was only natural especially as my dad doesn't follow any particular team.
 
I spent my first 18 years living in Tottenham.I know my mates went before me Perhaps it was like going to your local cinema for entertainment....I enjoyed playing it and watching the Spurs players train in their old five a side court behind The White Hart pub.I guess I just decided to go to a Spurs match to see what it was all about.I did,against Danny Blanchflower's Aston Villa,liked it and it stuck.I was about 12!
Horrible thought!My family could have brought me up near Highbury......suicide comes to mind!!!!!!!!
 
My old man was a Rugby man- no interest in football. In those days, in North London, we really did play football in the street. One of my mates was going to football one Saturday afternoon, I wangled an invite - got a few bob from my old man. The bloke was a Spurs fan, if he'd been a Gooner, I could have ended up supporting them! <yikes>

No one in my family supported football when I was growing up, but living in Hertfordshire I was exposed to a mixture of Spurs, Arsenal, Watford and of course Man Utd fans. I obviously got on better with the Spurs fans and ended up going to games sometimes when they had a spare ticket, it just sort of stuck. Now most of my friends are Gooners or Mousers believe it or not :(
 
When I first started having a kickabout with a group mates it was me that usually went in goal, at the time Pat Jennings was making saves and plucking corners out of the air with one hand, considering the extreme difficulty some keepers have using 2! <whistle>, it was an amazing feat to watch. He played for Spurs and that was that! :)

Unfortunately I don't really have much of a story... My whole family are Spurs fans and therefore never even had a choice (though I'm glad :D). My Grandad was on the books of Spurs pre-WW2 but unfortunately never made an appearance. My Auntie played for Spurs Ladies back in the day. For all my long exhausting 22 years I've lived in Tottenham. Got my first tattoo when I was 17 with - THFC - on the left forearm (what else was I gonna get!!! :D) so Spurs is very much in my blood.
 
I was born with a birthmark on my forehead in the shape of a cockerel standing on top of a ball, so I didn't have much choice really....

Better off than my cousin, though: He was born with a birthmark on his buttocks in the shape of a cannon!
 
When I was two years old, my family moved from the East End to Tottenham. All the white kids supported Spurs and all the black kids supported Arsenal. That's just how it was.
 
When I was quite young, maybe 7 or so, some lads came into the flat and asked me who I supported. I said I didn't know - basically I had no interest or much idea about footie at the time (I think it was banned in my local ILEA infants school as being too competitive or something). They said something like "you should support Spurs, they'll never let you down". For some reason I remember that almost word for word. Well that was in the late 60s and of course they have had plenty of opportunity to let me down after that - I attended every home match of the relegation season for example. Also where I lived my most local team would have been Orient, and whilst I normally despise those who don't support my local team at the time I thought Spurs were my local team!
 
Didn't have a choice. My Dad's a Spurs fan and had 4 sons, the first two were Spurs fans but then my Dad "took his eye off the ball" as he puts it and the third son was a Man Utd fan so as I was the youngest he took no chances with me, to say I was encouraged to support Spurs is putting it very lightly :D
 
Although growing up in South London my parents had met in Tottenham so I had a vested interest in the place. I supported my local team Dulwich Hamlet but I wanted a pro team and the nearest were Millwall & Palace. Then I saw Spurs play; no contest! Especially after going to Palace and watching some dire football and a crowd who looked and sounded like a bunch of donkeys all chanting Eee-aww. I later found out it was supposed to be Eagles. <laugh>

Super Spurs I grew up with and Super Spurs it is.<ok>

Similar to Spurf (we lived 6 doors apart but never knew each other) - I used to watch the Hamlet but got taken to WHL one Boxing Day game .... smitten.

I did go and watch the Palace in the late 60's, as my girlfriend's dad was the club doctor, Selhurst Park was easier to get to in time for kick-off (I didn't finish school till 1.30 on Saturdays).
 
Euro 96 - I liked Teddy Sheringham who was tearing it up for Spurs at the time.

One England match I turned to my Dad and said 'Dad who does Teddy Sheringham play for?' (I was pretty young so hadn't taken an interest in football before this)

He told me 'Tottenham' and I replied 'OK I support Tottenham then'

That was it - since then, I've been a Spurs fan :D

PS - my Dad wasn't too happy as he's a Goon :P
 
My dad is a spurs fan so me and my brothers are all spurs fans except for one who turned out to be a bloody liverpool fan <sick>
 
Brought up as a Spurs fan through my dad who was actually brought up as a chelsea fan but changed alliance to the mighty spurs as they were playing better football when he was a kid. all his family were chelsea fans and unfortunetly they converted my brother to a chelsea fan but i stuck it out with my dad and my first game was when i was about 12 after having a operation my dad promised to take me to White Hart Lane which he did the following season since then i have had the chance to be in executive lounge where i met defoe and bale actually played on white hart lane pitch and been to many games over the last 6 or so seasons.
 
My father had no interest in sport whatsoever,but my grand father and his twin brother were both massive Spurs fans and even went to the 1921 FA cup final.I was born in Surrey, actually about 100yds from the where the Chelsea training ground is now in Cobham.
I had two older brothers and we all loved football,my grand father tried to make sure we were all Spurs fans but one of my brothers let the family down badly by becoming a Chelsea fan.The day I really started surporting Spurs was when we played Chelsea in the 1967 FA cup final,my brother was telling me Chelsea would win so that was it for me,Spurs had to be my team.
1st started going to see Spurs in the early 70's with my granddad,who died while we were watching the 1971/72 League Cup semi-final Stoke City v West Ham(3-2)with a great save by G.Banks from a B.Moore pen.I think it was the 4th match of that semi.
