Not wishing to defend the Council by any means but I believe the Club rent the ground on a normal commercial property lease.Such leases usually contain provisions for the rent to be periodically reviewed. If the rent has not been agreed by the review date (eg if a tenant drags out the negotiations for whatever reason)then it's normal practice for the landlord to be able to claim the back rent. The Council would be open to a claim of negligence if they didn't try to get it back. Having said that if they do get it they'll no doubt spunk it some stupid "traffic calming" measures designed to keep shoppers out of the town centre and hasten its demise!
Surely if they had this oppotunity to increase, they should have done it then? and if not then can only take the increase from the the time they decide to. Also i would say how they can justify an increase of 743%, sounds to me they know ME has the money and are trying to screw him big time. ****ing dumb **** council. I can think of 2 perfect locations for ME stadium, First one is the old Hollies football ground near bucklesham, second one is the old suger beet factory at sproughton.
Guru-sorry to play devil's advocate but that's the way commercial property leases work-don't shoot the messenger . With regards to finding a new ground I suspect this is a non-starter as the club are probably tied into a long lease eg 50+ years. This is to give the Club security otherwise why would they invest in the ground, rebuilding North and South Stands, etc.if the Council could end the lease so they could sell the land for more unnecessary flats .
The Sproughton site is a very good shout! That area desperately needs regeneration and it would have good access from the A14. Plenty of room there for a large modern stadium and other public leisure activities. Maybe the old Tooks bakery site up at Whitton?
If we have a long lease on the current ground maybe we could keep some pigs on it and slaughter them to fill the pies at the new ground, a bit of home-grown produce.
Plus the railway line isn't far off, so perhaps a station can be built, so no fans have to go and spend any money in the town so it really ****s the council up. BigAl, it just seems that as soon as there is a bit of money within the club they crawl out of the woodwork, plus i would like to see how they can justify such a large increase! The council are a bunch of idiotic ****ers, we have a business park at my work and they try to charge us for 22 car parking spaces on the rates, we argued that the space was for 40ft lorries to turn around, strangely enough they didn't take up my offer for them to park 22 of their cars there while i got a 40ft lorry to turn around! ****ing money grabbing ****ers
As i said before the council and itfc should work together for the sake of the Town but the council are greedy.. 700+ % increase thats taking to piss.... Guru good call on a new stadium at the sugar beet factory . Ipswich Towns new ground called THE BEET..
