I was born in Lambourn, lindentree, and lived there until I went to London to make my fortune (not!). Family are still there so I go back quite a bit. My dad held the same post as Tony but in another yard (I'd better not say which one but you would not have to be Sherlock to work it out). There was a kind of travelling head lads union (and probably still is) so he and Tony were good friends. Tony was a quiet unassuming man and thoroughly deserved to be in the midst of all of PW's great success.
I assume then Fulkes that you saw Dessie there on the Open Day. I was there with my son and would you believe I was the first person to go and stroke Dessie. I was dying to but didn't have the nerve to be first as he walked round so I encouraged my son to be first. He wouldn't and told me to, so I did. Seconds later Dessie was surrounded by adoring fans. Lovely horse. I have photos of us somewhere with Dessie but we've never been very good at organising photos. Hopefully I'll come across them one day.
Ron, I know you meant "tampon," but I thought I'd let someone else work it out. Tamp on- it's a bit dodgy that one , Ron!
Ron, tamp can be to pack with a charge (gun-powder) and it has one string ( tampon ). "Does Cavalry Charge help?" As they say where I come from...No, no, I'm not buying that one!
The end of a charge "Caval(ry)" Sounds like the end "RI" Sounds like it has a string attached (BOW) and looks like the parasitic larva of a botfly (bot) Ribot. Have I still not got the hang of it? Maybe I should give up and just try to work out yours.
Ron, a bit obtuse in fairness. Since when is cavalry a charge? It may be what it does , but it's not a synonym for it. It's a fair try, but you picked a hard one in Ribot. Having said that, they're not easy to compile and be accurate in their logic. I'll see your reply tomorrow, Ron- i'm tired and off to the land of nod. Goodnight and God bless.
Sorry. I just thought Cavalry charge was a well used term and went for that. Ah well. I'm off to bed now also.
Enterprisingly ridden by a man named Steve Was the last time he won, would you believe When you do this it makes fools of us all And the ref's one of these, I've heard football fans call Who am I?
FF, i think I said before that PO and I ended up in Lambourn from Epsom races,we were also with a few lads from H.Candy yard.We used to get TD tickets for Chelsea v Liverpool as he was a Liverpool fan. What a ******** LIBERTY. a lovely man.
Ron - I tend to avoid going back to Lambourn on the Open Days as it is so crowded. But they are great for the village - it's just a shame that as a training centre it is not quite where it was. There are plenty of trainers but it is not like the days when we had Winter and the Walwyns. Henderson and Hills are keeping the flag flying and I hope more talented trainers come along to replace them.
