I have never hated a horse - that would be absurd.
But I have at times got a bit sick of the hype surrounding a horse. Desert Orchid is a prime example. I was in the Malt Shovel in Upper Lambourn the other week and you could not even avoid huge photos of the horse in there, although the horse had no connection with the village at all and there have been many great horses trained within a couple of hundred yards of the pub.
I can also be turned off a horse by the connections. Nicholls is the best trainer of his generation (obviously!) but his oafish behaviour is a real turn off and when you combine that with the ultra-smug Clive Smith there is every reason to want to see Kauto Star get beat. But that is not hating the horse himself - he is magnificent.
