In the 50th anniversary year of the World Cup win, the Club are apparently planning to honour George Cohen. Meanwhile a short clip to remember his contribution to Fulham Football and Athletic Club:
The Club have announced that it's going to be a statue - by the same guy who did the Johnny Haynes one so should be quality. No indication yet where it'll be sited. "Fulham Football Club is delighted to announce that it has commissioned esteemed sculptor Douglas Jennings to create a statue of George Cohen MBE. It will be displayed at Craven Cottage and unveiled in October 2016 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of England’s famous World Cup victory in 1966, in which George played and raised the iconic Jules Rimet trophy." please log in to view this image Here's a link to the full story: http://www.fulhamfc.com/news/2016/march/02/fulham-announce-george-cohen-tribute
Oh how we could do with Fulhams best ever 2 full backs George Cohen Jim Langley I am old enough to have seen and appreciated both.
You'll remember this one as well rosc - Fred 'the tank' Callaghan. He took over at left back when Barry Mealand, who had taken over from Jim Langley, got injured and had to retire. Great to see Fred at the Cottage last night in honour of # Cohen66 please log in to view this image
Fred Callaghan has always been one of my favourite players, as he was a manager of my Local team Enfield FC in some of their best days.
I met Fred at the Sheff Weds game. He gave my mum a lift in his taxi back to Putney station along with the late Barry Mealands wife. Top bloke! Very very Fulhamish to offer a lift in his black cab!
The target has been reached with 1 day to go and since Mr Khan is matching it pound for pound that another £100k out of his back pocket. please log in to view this image
Blimey some publicity at last and from a very unusual source - The Express. "Fulham are to unveil a statue of their England World Cup hero George Cohen before next Saturday’s derby dog fight with QPR." please log in to view this image Link to the story: http://www.express.co.uk/sport/foot...-Cup-George-Cohen-statue-inspire-Championship
Really good article here by Fulham fan Dave Kidd http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/fulham-george-cohen-statue-legend-8918417
Oh well, better late than never: "We are delighted to announce that the unveiling of the George Cohen statue will take place at Craven Cottage on Saturday morning. The statue has been paid for by numerous generous donations by fans, with the final figure matched pound for pound by our Chairman Shahid Khan, who will be revealing the statue at 10.30am. Unfortunately, due to the location of the statue, we are unable to accommodate all fans at the unveiling, but you will be able to follow it all across our social channels, including live videos on Periscope (Twitter) and Facebook. Gates will open ahead of our West London derby against Queens Park Rangers at 11.15am, and fans in the Riverside and Hammersmith Stands are encouraged to head to the corner to see George’s statue in all its splendour." I don't recall George ever playing in a wedding dress, you live and learn. Joking aside (yes it was a joke), I hope the day goes well and any photos posted here following the defrocking would be welcome.
Don't want to be rude or controversial but when they showed the unveiling on the 'big' screen at Saturday's game the first thing I said to my son was, "Jings, it looks like Bobby Moore". Got an email from the Club this morning that included a gallery of pictures and having now seen the statue in close up, 'fraid I've not changed that opinion. Disappointing really and hard to understand because the Johnny Haynes one, by the same sculptor, is such a good likeness.
