Was in Thetis Island, just north of Salt Spring in 2019. Went to the island’s Xmas ‘do’ in the Community Hall. Walked in and heard a Hull accent, absolutely unmistakeable. Turns out the owner of it, a lady in her 70’s, had lived there for 30-odd years. She was born in Boulevard, Hull, 200m from where I was brought up. I asked her if she ever went back, she said she’d been back a few years earlier, thought Hessle Road was **** and full of P***s. Conversation didn’t last long after that…

Why? You think Hessle Road is a more desirable place to live than Oxford?

Because the lady in question was a small-minded, bigoted and generally unpleasant person.

I know you were referring to her shortening the name of the country people were from. (I originally meant to put a laughing emoji to acknowledge my reply was light hearted). I am sure Hessle Road has been improved and enriched. Surprised you don’t want to return there.
I can’t begin to describe the anguish caused by hearing us British people being referred to by the abbreviated word Brits. But nobody tells the perpetrators off.

the scots and the aussies don't seem to mind.

the germs might take a dimmer view.

I don't think Scots are too fussed about being called Scots.
They might take some mild offence at being labelled useless, minging, attention seeking, skirt wearing ****houses but I'm sure it's not aimed at them in any sort of bigoted way...:emoticon-0103-cool:

the scots seem to take umbrage at being called scotch.

until i point out that robbie burns used to call them scotch.

which, oddly, they don't seem to know.

I'm married to one and Fathered 4 and they've never took umbrage at being called Scotch?

It is old hat though nowadays,as Scotch is best used to describe an alcoholic beverage.

yes, that's usually their counter argument.

i am fractionally scotch myself, and it's not a large fraction. not even as large as the small fraction that's lancastrian.
