Crossing is not about being inch perfect,its about putting in an area that goalies and defenders hate. You can get a mistake, OG or a corner even if the cross isn't perfect.

Yes of course. But TBH he had BZ, Charlie and Barton arriving in the box, and I don't think Derby had many more people than that, yet Hoilett picked out their man! I'm not knocking him, we need players like him to go at defenders (like SWP ), but his passing, when to pass, and his shooting are definitely what he should be training on. The goal he made in the final rather sums up both his strenghs and weaknesses,

I agree with the OP 100%: he made that goal out of nothing. I'm a long-term fan. Sure, he has weaknesses (first touch, accuracy of crosses, doesn't score enough...) but he has pace, works hard and - all important - he clearly scares opposition defences.

Re comment above, I also liked Mackie (didn't we all?) but Junior has much more impact.

I think his biggest weakness is bundling the ball out of play, maybe the Wembley pitch helped him.

yes it's been a long time since SWP gave the illusion he might do something with the ball other than fall over it. At least Hoilett threatens to do something before going arse over tit. A sizeable difference.

Hoilett/mackie comparisons are laughable. Always rated Junior, his pace alone is enough to worry any defence. Was brilliant against Wigan in the semi as well.

Absolutely this!!
He is a confidence player and the constant barracking he has received from a lot of Rangers fans can't have helped him.
Did anyone have the same criticisms of Hoilett when he was dazzling for Blackburn?

He needed to do something as he's been largely disappointing. As I've said before recently, he seems to have done a lot of what people were criticising Mackie for, i.e. running forward, head down, into cul-de-sacs, no end product.

I stand by this even though some find it apparently 'laughable'. If I have been the only one to have considered his performances to have been largely disappointing* since he came to West London, then so be it. But I remain a fan of Junior Hoilett nonetheless and hope that we see more this coming season of the young star that was at Blackburn.

*Disappointing in that I believe he is capable of more. Perhaps it has been a coaching, tactical, fitness, psychological or confidence issue?

I think the problem with Hoilett has been that he's been played on the right a lot this season. He does struggle on that wing because he can't go outside and cross. A left fullback can keep him fairly quiet by waiting for him to cut inside each time. Down the left he's far more dangerous.

He still did well at the crunch time of the season though, including the final even though guys were slating him on the Match Day thread!

He's right footed. He's been played on the left where he tries to cut in and shoot, but is more effective on the right where he can get to the goal line and pull the ball back into the centre. Like at Wembley.

Good point Stan. I made a bit of a mess of that to be honest. What I meant to say was he's poor on the right because when he cuts in, the ball's on his left/weaker foot, that's why he's better down the left because he can cut in at will. He actually probably can't go outside and cross at all. I've never seen him do it. Its not his game (Despite what I said only moments ago ).

Wembley was one of the few times it worked for him from that side which is why he deserves all the more credit.

I do disagree with you that he's more effective down that wing. Any games where he's played very well have been down the left IMO.

I am hoping Hoillett comes good next season and believe he will, always more threat than Mackie, liked mackie's honesty and effort but he was mostly useless I'm afraid, especially his mis header against Man Citeh

Yes, his part in the goal has certainly not been overlooked on my part. I wonder though whether we will ever see from him what we thought we were signing. Here's hoping.

Hoilett is the type of player that will try, try and try again.

It wont work 9 times out of 10 but we have to be patient and wait for it to work.
The alternative is to have the safe play, it won't get anywhere, no one will moan but it will be constant backwards passes with no chances created.

Hoilett ran past a man who thought he had no chance of getting it, won a 30 70 tackle and put in a great ball. He also got us back in the semi too.

I completely agree. Hoillet always has a good go, and isn't afraid to take on a man. His style of play always means he's likely to make mistakes, because it's so enterprising. The guy's only 23, I'm sure over time he can go from beating his man 1/10 times...to 3/10, etc etc. He's displayed some very admirable defensive workrate recently too
