A SORTING office worker stole nearly £45,000 from parcels and used the money to buy £300 pairs of designer shoes.
Angela Doran, 38, was caught at work in July 2010 with two parcels containing £4500.
She then admitted stealing another 18 packages containing a total of £39,150. The thefts dated back to May 2008.
A search of Doranâs home revealed a treasure trove of designer goods including shoes with £300 price tags on the boxes. She earned around £12,000 a year at the time.
Prosecutor Deborah Carroll told Glasgow Sheriff Court: âIt was quite clear that the accused appeared to be living beyond her means.â
Doran targeted cash packages sent from remote post offices to the Glasgow Royal Mail Centre in Springburn.
The court heard it was easy for workers at the centre to spot the parcels which contained cash.Bosses knew cash was going missing and had Doran under surveillance when she was caught while on a night shift.
She was seen taking two of the packages and putting them aside, and had one of the parcels hidden in her dungarees when a Royal Mail investigator approached her. As well as searching Doranâs home in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, investigators checked her bank accounts.
They found she had made large deposits on days when parcels had been stolen. Doran admitted embezzling a total of 20 packages.
Sheriff Kenneth Mitchell deferred sentence until next month for reports.
Doranâs lawyer, Euan Cameron, will make a plea in mitigation at the sentencing hearing, and the sheriff will decide on a Crown motion for a confiscation order against the thief.
