Believe it or not I don't want the darksiders to fold, I think it's good for the City and RL in general that they both survive. They're still ****s though.
I agree, the sport is in decline as far as revenue and popularity is concerned, with Hull FC lease coming up for renewal shortly, that would be a good time to merge and play the games at Hull KR ground, it makes economic sense.
Why would HKR merge with a failing club like FC, it’s like City merging with Scunny, HKR are on the up, their fans would never allow it, Pearson ****ed up when he sacked Radders.
Wasn’t that live on air? Sure I was told that happened. If so, for a bloke who was generally good at City, that’s a massive faux pas.
Yes it was, and Pearson was at my sons wedding where he said he Radford would be coach as long as he owned FC, mind it was the day after they beat Rovers, and he was slightly pissed, but Radders was all in with FC, won 2 challenge cups in a row, were doing ok, yet Pearson took notice of a few moaning fans.
Not exactly, the post match interview was supposed to be with Radford, but as Pearson had just told him he was being let go he came out to do the interview instead, either way it wasn't a great look. I know **** all about rugby league, but I thought Tony Smith had done a good job at KR and it seemed a decent appointment at the time.
The sport's been in the **** financially for years, but they did sign a new broadcast deal in February and their games will now be televised free to air on the BBC, which is going to give them far more exposure.
Being shown live on the BBC might give them more exposure but I doubt it it will do anything to persude people to actually go to a game and pay at the turnstile. Live exposure just shows the game for what it is to a wider audience sat in the comfort of their own homes. To me, every RL game is basically the same game, no matter which teams are competing. One team has the ball for five tackles, then kicks it ( usually aimlessley hoping for a lucky bounce) then the other team has a go and this is repeated for 80 mins. The again a lot of people like darts, so there is no accounting for taste. It would be interesting to see the viewing figures for live RL games on the BBC, a competition which the BBC cannot even be bothered enough to broadcast the results on their sports programmes. I get the impression the BBC pay lipservice to RL because it is cheap, not because it is universily popular. Showing live Womans football has hardly increased attendance figures at the turnstiles and they get far more exposure on the BBC these days then RL. Basically I believe Adam Pearson would sooner be the chairman of a football club right now then a RL club. Because he told me and a few others gathered at a City fund raising night when he took over that he has no time for RL and even less interest.
WSL attendances this season are up 43%, they've already surpassed the total attendances for last season and there's still 36 games left to play. The numbers are obviously low compared to the men's game (other than Arsenal who average over 35,000), but they're increasing rapidly.
Good luck to them. I know how popular the womans games is at grass roots level around here because I have a young grandaughter who plays for a club and she loves it. I go to watch her and the games involving girls far out number the boys leagues on a Saturday morning. They are coached far better than I was at that age too. I sometimes watch the highlights of the WSL on the BBC and personally thought the crowds at the games don't do justice to the coverage they receive, Arsenal apart, and look like the sort of numbers you might see at a decent level of non league (mens) football, and you'd never see the likes of a Beverley Town game broadcast live on the BBC. The Rugby League have tried virtually everything possible to make the game more attractive to a wider audience and nothing seems to work. They even opened the gates for free at one of the London franchises they tried and still not enough numbers turned up to make it viable. On that score I just don't see how showing games live on the BBC is going to work this time when it hasn't in the past. Live RL on the box just isn't the attraction that football is, even WSL football.
Beverley Town have an average attendance of 172, WSL games have an average attendance of 7,500, hardly comparable.
That is swayed by a few games played at the stadiums of the men’s teams at very low prices. It isn’t putting the income up much being shown on BBC. And won’t for RL as it won’t suddenly attract paying customers outside the M62 corridor.
Is that going to increase interest, I'm not so sure. I just feel it is a game that is stagnating and is unlikely to start generating revenue enough to sustain it. Having it free to view on BBC might have an adverse effect on attendances also.
Ideal solution would be one Hull RL team. Having 2 unfortunately sustains a rivalry that too often detracts people from the city supporting what should be their football team, as well as suppressing the potential of Hull to have a (the?) top RL club. Having just one RL club would likely result in, other than with the inevitable idiots, everyone supporting both City and the Hull RL team. Maybe it would take a new generation to see the sense in wanting the best for the football club and the RL club that represents their city. Hull RL and City would likely be winners out of it, meaning 2 bigger, more successful clubs. Unfortunately I can't see it happening. Maybe natural evolution in a stagnating (being generous) sport will eventually lead to 1 major club and 1 lower league club, but more likely we'll just see periods where, like now, KR is the top dog, then it will change for a while to FC, and so on, with neither really reaching the potential that a 1 club city could achieve. (I'm probably just stating the obvious with all that!)
Can we please stop with this talk of mergers, it's never going to happen, fans of both Clubs don't want it to happen. It'd be like us merging with tws, never gonna happen.
You are probably right, it's never (likely) gonna happen. However, tbf, it's nothing at all like us merging with TWS! Not in the slightest. Not least as they are from Leeds, we are from Hull.; whereas HKR and Hull FC are both from Hull. (I guess everyone on here knew that, but just in case!). Both HKR and FC likely destined to perpetual under-achievement and ongoing struggles to survive, in a sport that itself continues to struggle. Although at the present time, HKR seem to be making a far better job of it (but how long will that last, and how far will it take them). Fair?
WSL is the elite of womans football with blanket coverage nationally on the BBC. Beverley Town, and clubs of a similar size play way down the football league, with no coverage whatsoever on the BBC, so hardly comparable, although I would say the standard of football is better at Beverley.
