Apparently Brynner was highly irritated by McQueen, who would do little tricks like shaking his shotgun cartridges and wiping his hat brim to steal scenes while Brynner was talking. Eli Wallace found it very funny. Brynner also refused to be in the same scene as McQueen if they both had to do a fast draw, because McQueen was really fast (for an actor I suppose, but he was a very accomplished real life race driver in cars and bikes, so his reflexes were probably very good), on the grounds that it would damage his character’s credibility to be outdrawn. As you can tell I’ve just been reading about it.
