  1. You can't have hatred for all coppers because of the way a proportion of them acted at some point or other. Its like opposition fans hating all Liverpool fans because DR is a nasty twat <whistle> I think a lot of coppers do a very good job but then, I could be being biased here as I know quite a few coppers. I actually won a football tournament a few years back player for their team as they were short on players (yes, I had a few more bumps and bruises after that one <laugh>)

We've had our own issues with the police over here but I don't lump them all in together. The institution? Yes? The upper echelons of the forces? Yes: because to get that high you had to work well with the corruption, covering of asses and lying. But I'd say that about most organisations.

I do however believe there are people that go into the job with the intention of serving the public, much like the armed forces. Some get corrupted others stay quiet, others fight or leave.

When you look at what happened in New York during the 70's and 80's it's possible to clean a force up enough to make a difference. It needs the will to do so.

Oh and the more despicable part of what came out and continues with these barristers is that the Ambulance service is going to argue exactly the same thing to excuse their incompetence. Now that is a complete disgrace. Their only job is to take care of the sick and injured. To pass blame on their failure to do so is just horrible.

Yeah, so was I, but even my Dad ended up feeling just as I did. It's too deep-seated now.

I'm with donga on this one. The police (and the U.S.) are not all bad, and without them things would be even worse (not sure about the U.S. on that one.....).
The problem is that they have an us and them mentality which means that they, as an institution, tend to protect their own even when it's clearly unjust and that leads some of them to commit the most unforgivable wrongs against those they are supposed to protect, as we have seen.
I would always steer clear of indiscriminately condemning the whole of any group of people, though. Many of the police at Hillsborough became victims of their own force closing its ranks and forbidding them to report what they actually saw.

I don't hate coppers, but I totally distrust the organisation that they work for.

I knew you, of all people, would be rational about this. I try, but it's so very, very hard. I do know a couple who, ostensibly, seem to be good guys, but I'm unable to trust any of them, I'm afraid.

  9. Bit like that myself. Not afraid to say what I think and have been known to upset people in meetings but always make peace immediately afterwards as its just work. Very rare I fall out with people at all TBH. However, once I'm on a footy pitch and tend to lose all human reserve and fly into tackles etc <laugh>

The most foul-mouthed and dirty teams I ever played against was a team of Catholic missionaries! Having been subbed, I asked their manager why. His reply was "If you are about to face terrorist with guns on your own you'd swear and kick people!" - couldn't argue with that <laugh>

Not quite right there RHC, Duckenfeld and the other match day police commanders are saying the vast majority of LFC supporters on the day were drunk and were to blame for the crush, which is exactly what they said back 1989 but which was proved not to be the case in the Taylor report.

Any match going supporter of ANY club back in that era will tell you that it was common practice to have a pint before the match and Notts Forest supporters on that day will also have been in the pubs pre-match, I've been in pubs with opposition fans in Europe, at Wembley, at friendlies, semi finals at Sheffield, Birmingham, Manchester and London, I hope some supporters of other clubs step forward and point out to the inquest that it was/is a tradition for supporters to have a prematch drink and its not a f**king crime.

Of course it is, which is why it is a pitiful excuse for the South Yorks police to use either then or now.

I know Page. I've never been to a match without a few bevvies. They don't have a leg to stand on, so they're going to use discrediting tactics to try to divert the jury from the real truth. It ****ing stinks.

It's whatever we Scousers want to call them!

  19. Exactly <ok>

Unfortunately (or fortunately...) I was only eight years old when Hillsborough happened so never experienced a match day from them days. However, there was more hooliganism around so did people drink more for "dutch courage"...? (for the record, I am just having a conversation and not suggesting anything the police say to possibly be true)

  20. May as well call Everton "Pineapple and Grapefruit FC" then since that's not their name either <laugh>
