His Arkestra were up my way a few years ago but sadly I missed them - I was totally gutted. 1993 was such a bad year for music - Sun Ra, Dizzy Gillespie and Frank Zappa all died. Annus horribilis indeed.
I couldn't think of a reason to post this other than to celebrate the 'Pea-nuts' seller on the old North Bank
Holy moly: Best lines: And they say her flower is faded now, hard weather and hard booze But maybe that's just the price you pay for the chains you refuse
Massive loss - didn't see this reference to Dizzy until after I'd posted Salt Peanuts. Same wavelengths n all that
Here's one for Daniel Levy
Fela is great. My niece and I dance around to his tunes whenever she visits Have you heard his son, Seun? I'm not as much in favour as I am of his father, but he still has some good tunes:
I just missed out on a WOMAD ticket this year - Sean Kuti was playing. The sax player in the band I play in went to see him, and came back with some new licks
Here's another one for the spuds
A shame, but a sax player's dream indeed Went to WOMAD nine years ago - it was a wonderful experience. My memories of it are hazy, but I at least came away remembering this woman: What instrument do you play in your band btw?
From the first album I ever bought, and a message from John Henry to Wenger, perhaps...
Beautiful I saw Ali Farka Toure at Womad a few years ago. Love Mali music and Ghanaian highlife and Ethio Jazz from the other side of the continent. I play Bass in a Latin/Afro/Funk band
My band do a version of this. We've got girls and boys in the band so we can capture the captivating vocal harmonies
I damn well knew it - I'm a bass player too. Played it hard since I was 14 but have lost my way in recent years. I still have my old machines though - an Ibanez and a fretless Schechter Diamond Series. This man did a lot for me:
So much of Highlife is great from a bassists point of view. Paul Simon showed the world this with Graceland
I was massively influenced by Flea and Larry Graham and Bootsy Collins. BONE CRUNCHING MAYHEM FUNK
That was a seminal album on many levels. So much good Highlife that went under the radar
Bassbuddies ... the Stingray is a beautiful thing, if a little out of my price range. How much of a difference having a good machine makes though! I remember playing a £2k Rickenbacker and loving every second of it. It must be how a keyboardist feels when he plays a baby grand. Who are your favourite bassists? Sticky this thread btw. Edit: Larry Graham!!!!
I used to own a 79 pre ernie ball Stingray, but had to sell it when my car blew up years ago, the worst thing I ever did. They now fetch 2k upwards. I got a great deal on a newish three band eq Stingray a couple of years ago and this is my main gigging bass now, it's a beast. I love the tone of a Stingray, it's got it all - low end, nice middles and rasping top end. It's a very distinctive sound and I can pick out a Stingray on any record. Fave Bassists. Jaco of course, Flea, Larry Graham, Bernard Edwards, Bootsy Collins, Meshell Ndegeocello, Aaron Mills from Cameo, Stuart Zender, Esperanza Spalding is a divine creature. One of my fave ever though is Les Claypool from Primus This one is for you Kyle
Yes yes yes! I've been a big Zappa fan for a long time, so some of my favourite bass players are Scott Thunes: ... and Patrick O'Hearn: (the latter O'Hearn video was supposedly a cut taken from his audition for Zappa, which tells you a lot about his on-the-spot chops)
