Saying goodbye like Kevin Campbell:
From one of my favourite albums ever (and the first one I bought, I think...)
Definitely a great album that. And equally as good around the same time:
What a tune Also came out around the same time: I'm not too fussed about Beck, but Odelay was special.
Oh, and Loser was great too:
I think mezzanine was the first cd i ever bought Aside from huge hits 96 and the like
Elizabeth Frazer who sang on Massive Attack's Teardrop was also in a band who my girlfriend at the time adored, the Cocteau Twins. She'd always have Heaven or Las Vegas on when I went to visit, so that album always had a good outcome for me too . Cocteau Twins were also on a great indie label 4AD. Another band on that label called Lush used to have a sexy half Japanese singer / guitar player called Miki Berenyi who I ended up snogging in a drunken backstage piss up at the Venue, a classic indie club in New Cross. Happy Days
Sticking with '96 for a second:

Hahahaha - how old are you? It's a LONG time now since the Venue was an Indie club Cheeeeeeeeeeese to the max for years!
I am still Thirtysomething ... just Last time I drove past the Venue was about ten years ago and eve then the bill was a cheesefest with tribute bands on the lineup. I've no idea how bad it is these days, but back when I used to go it was a hotbed of talent and a real launchpad for a lot of Indie bands, like Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine, Lush, Neds Atomic Dustbin, Sheep on Drugs. There used to be one great night each year in New Cross when the student bar at Goldsmiths finished for the summer and we used to drink the bar dry before the beer went off in the barrels before heading over the road to the Venue, some messy nights there ..... I also used to be a regular at the Fordham Park festival behind the venue, which used to be a good mix of Indie, Punk, Reggae, and some of the finest Caribbean cooking in South London. Where about's do you live fella ? I presume you're familiar with the area ?
Yeah i live about a 10-15 minute drive away and for a long time New Cross was a regular stop on a friday and saturday night. Venue was great as a teenager who wants to get drunk and pull an easy girl but very quickly became unbearable due to the music. I was barred on my 19th Birthday (very messy night) and never went back! I occasionaly still head up to New cross, my brother DJ's and puts on events there fairly regularly and New Cross Inn has a decent mix of events (new bands, dance nights, speakers e.g. Howard Marks) so can be quite an interesting night out. In recent years it has become a lot more, erm, "arty" for want of a better word, compared to the more ghetto feel it used to have lol
I haven't lived in London for over fifteen years now, as soon as some parts of Deptford started getting 'Gentrified' I knew the place was going down the pan
New Cross was always one step ahead of the game when it came to comedy, cabaret and music. The Student union at Goldsmiths helped to launch the careers of Vic Reeves and Julian Clary and there was always a buzz of a 'new discovery' at the Venue. This was of course before the days of x-factor and mass media exposure, when bands became famous because they were good, not just because they looked good.
