Due to the fact we are in need of a couple of better quality players to get us over the line and that was made evident in certain areas of the field on Saturday vs port vale.
those areas for me being the difference in the outcome i.e. defencive midfield, attacking midfield & striker being the most obvious, brings me on to a matter that alwaysright spoke of.

that is - should we push the boat out slightly to gain the players needed for our challenge of staying in the top three or 'top of the league' if you wish !
obviously it would be at a financial cost in the short term and could cause unrest within the playing staff...though i'd say it's worth making such a bold move, rather than lose out yet again in not achiving promotion from the basement division and all that follows.
as paul scally has stated before that there is only a slight financial reduction/gain between two/one divisions, but i'm not so sure...i think there is more to gain from going up than just that and that's bigger attendances, sponsors wanting to be involved with us, more players having more interest in joining us higher up the league and so on...all financial gain in the short/long term and everyone to do with Gillingham fc being a lot more happy and confident in our future regards all things Gillingham fc !

back to these areas on the field that i speak of, being defencive/attack midfield & striker, positions covered by certain players who we've been interested in and are by the looks of things are way above our price structure, those in question are David Wright, Cody Mcdonald & maybe Sam Saunders, surely these are worth the punt be it on loan or long term and that's evidently obvious why that's the reason they bring higher price tags and wage demands !

I think only one player is needed we should not be bringing in any more midfielders.

i dont think we need to panic yet. i actually thought we played well on saturday and on another day we could have got something from the game and if we are looking to bring someone in it should be permanent building for league one on a wage that suits our structure

in terms of more revenenue in terms of gate receipts, i think we would struggle to maintain our current attendances in league one ( 6-7k plus) if we were anything less that pushing for the playoffs

for me the defensive midfield position is most important. since losing wright we have conceded a lot more goals. we tried montrose there and Frampton but neither works. I thought gregory was signed for this position but it doesn't look like it? or is he just being eased in to it? if so not sure why he was brought on for payne when we were chasing an equaliser-is gregory a replacement for vincelot and iof so are we still looking to bring wright back?

a new striker would be good to freshen things up for the second half of the season but arent we still one of the highest goalscorers in the division? its the fact we are conceding more goals that's the bigger problem i feel. whoever comes in though should be part of our plans for league 1 next season

From memory we have the best defence in the league so how can we be conceding more goals??? We need a striker and thats it, surely everyone agrees with that its not rocket science.

MA has gone for a different formation now that see's us use two holding midfielders and two attacking midfielders with Payne and Gregory likely to play together. Gregory was signed instead of David Wright due to Wright's wage demands being too high, which is quite appropriate for this thread.

Lenny, putting aside the striker comment < cough > - I believe you are right about the defence, now I have not checked the stats but I thought from a recording I had seen before Port Vale on SKY with Martin Allen, the presenter said during the show we had the second best defensive record in all the leagues. Maybe I was just imagining that and should just stick to slating MA...ha, ha
