3 pts again away, cant complain, nice little run to bring a smile. Night all, pleased for the boys and girls who made the journey.
Take the points on a Tuesday night away from home on a Tuesday any night of the week mate! Pleased with that. Dare we win three on the bounce H to the Blades?
Good result, albeit possibly one to be expected if we have any pretensions on a play off place. Seems like we rode our luck, but a disciplined performance, two goals from Waghorn and, as much as I hate to say it, another example of McCarthy tactically out-thinking the opposition manager and coming away with all three points.
Well done Town, yes typical dogged Mick away performance. Hope nothing too major with Carayol? Respect to Sears, Bart tonight and of course good to see Waggy scoring again!
I guess you could call it a tactical win for Mick because we won. Playing 8 defenders against a team in poor form got a result, that was it in my opinion. It wasn't like we dominated them or stopped them playing though. They looked better than us, passed better than us and were more dangerous. If not for at least two fine saves from our keeper it would have been different. I didn't see anything resembling a tactical victory, just a win.
Glad we won but agree with SD,MM is a tactical one horse pony and his methods eventually prevail, even a stopped clock is right twice a day!
I'm not saying McCarthy is some tactical innovator, because he is not, but I think credit where credit is due over recent weeks. He's changed the formation which play to our strengths and it's been getting results, he's getting good performances from maligned players such as Iorfa, and his substitutes have generally looked good lately. Take last night, Sears (a player I usually wouldn't have anywhere near the pitch) got played up top and put in a good performance and played a key part in a goal. Ward also came on in central midfield, not his best position, and also put in a good shift. Our defence was well organised and restricted them to two shots on target. I don't think there was that much difference between the teams, we took our chances, they didn't. We rightly have a pop at Mick when he doesn't get the result and we play poorly, but when we get an away win in a tight match, fair play. I don't think we will finish anywhere near the top six, but at least we are still in contention for now, with two winnable home games coming up.
It comes back to the recent debate, doesnt it? Entertainment, attacking, flowing footie of Ipswich of old, ride our luck and perhaps lose, or, a determined dogged, performance and a decent night shift, showing some character, surprising fresh performances from Freddie & well taken Waggy goals, must have brought cheer to all those tough fans who travelled half the country to support the team, and see us take another 3pts away from home. Resources, injuries, investment same old storylines, but MM for all his acknowledged weaknesses, does grind results out, albeit painfully! I guess I am a two-trick pony, want to hear or see that flair ( which we deffo have here and there, if MM plays them) but equally, nice to take hard won 3 pts, from a depressingly defensive line-up...8 ffs! Connolly continues to impress, as does old Skusey, and I put my hand up and had written him off a year or two ago. My money, if not my head nor my heart, is on him staying, MM that is.
I believe that at this stage of the season, results should be the priority. We have an outside chance of making the top six, but with a small squad hit by injuries, we need every point to break into what is the most competitive play off race I can remember for a while (the top five almost have the places sown up already). Okay, so realistically we'll fall short, but with our form and the fact it's still mathematically possible, we cannot be so cynical as to completely rule it out. I think Mick will stay, if he maintains results and achieves a top half finish. That'll be enough for Marcus. Personally, despite my appreciation for the way we grind out results under Mick, I think we need a fresh approach and a change after nearly six years of this. While I'll always take a result over a performance, it's not sustainable if you don't have the many good performances. Choosing a team dominated by defensive players will inevitably get broken down against the better teams in this division. We still have a few games to play against sides in the top six, and those games will provide a useful barometer of how far this team is off from being promotion contenders.
