I'm a first class spanner when it comes to anything like this.
You basically save a photo/ image into a file.
Go to your control panel ( top right)and insert the image as your avatar.
That's about as much help as I can offer mate.
Someone might read this and say I'm talking bollocks and point you in a more detailed direction.

Go to forum settings at the top of the page, and take it one stage at a time Tigerbrikki. I'm a relative internet newbie myself, only been online since 2007 despite being being late thirties age so I remember very well what it's like when you can't figure stuff out. Any trouble send me a private message, the link is at the top of the page.
That's about the limit of my knowledge here NFU, was trying to post a picture before and gave up as couldn't figure it out so guess I'm just above special class for internets skills still

North Ferriby Utd.
My lad played in goal for one of the boys teams and on the old 606 I just thought of the NFU with his shirt number after it.
He's now a centre half so I should be NFUNo5.
Mystery solved, should have thought of North Ferriby really but it's not my neck of the woods right now (Beverley).
