If you place an each way bet in an 8 runner race (i.e. you should get paid on 1st, 2nd and 3rd) BUT then a horse becomes a non runner hence reducing the field to 7 what happens if your horse is third?

Do you get paid out on a place as when you placed the bet the terms where 1/5th the odds top three finish (presumably with a R4 deduction)? Or is it simply tough luck?

Any concrete advice much appreciated. Cheers
 
If you put the bet on today (i.e. the day of the race), therefore it is not ante-post, you will be paid out on the terms that prevail when the race is run.

It was 1/5 odds 1-2-3 when there were eight runners; it is now 1/4 odds 1-2 because there are seven runners.

yeah beef that is a tough one as it is for when the 16,17,18 runner handicaps become 15 and bet your bottom dollar in that scenario your horse will finish 4th.

I remember one time before bookies were offering guaranteed odds for singles I backed a horse at 6/1 in an 8 runner race race (thinking it was a solid E/W bet with a good chance of winning). It drifted in the market to 10/1 then the second favourite was withdrawn. My horse finished second, however I got hit with a triple whammy in that (a) I was losing out on the drift in the market - no guaranteed odds, (b) the fact that I lost one of the places 3 down to 2, (c) There was a sizeable rule 4, which meant I got about 75% of my original stake back. Had I have known that there would have been 7 runners I most certainly would not have had a bet. But that is the way it goes sometimes.
 
If you'd had your bet on the place market on Betfair though, you'd still have got paid out on 3rd place despite the non-runner(s). Worth bearing in mind if you have a Betfair account.
 
If you place your bet with a conventional bookie you would lose your place side of the bet and it would become a win bet, with your stake i.e. 1 ew would become 2 win. if you had placed the bet on the exchanges, your place side would stand, with a reduction factor coming into play.

Unlucky Beefy- it is very harsh but that is the unfortunate part of racing.



Basically, if you bet on an antepost market, you will be paid for the places that they offered to pay at that time (Betfair is always 3 no matter what size the feld, but some larger antepost fields might get 4 places at bookies such as Bet365).



One thing I'd remind EVERYONE though:



ALWAYS CHECK YOUR ANTEPOST EACH-WAY PLACINGS..


LAST YEAR I BACKED GO ALL THE WAY FOR CHELTENHAM CHAMPION BUMPER AT 40/1 WITH THE FIELD OF 20 ODD RUNNERS. HE FINISHED 4TH.

Did Victor "Robbing Bastard" Chandler pay me?

Cos apparantly, the ante post places only covered 3 places, despite the actual field on the day being so big that they paid 4 places.


Suffice to say the tight arse old **** has never had my custom again.

I wonder what would happen if a big race (lets say the Argento) only had five declared at the five day stage, presumably bookies would advertise the race as place 1-2, if a couple then pull out or even three don't go leaving a field of two, would they still honour the terms advertised ?
I guess they would.
As Tam says above, the price may be shorter but betting with Betfair on the place market guarantees you 3 places
