Help needed - External hard drive fecked

Switched on PC this morning and wee window appeared saying USB connection has malfunctioned. It is my external hard drive, whichhas loads of music , pics etc on it. It doesn't show up as existing when I open up the pc. Any (preferably sensible ) ideas as to how I can get the stuff off it of it;s ****ed? Cheers

they're underpaid. it takes years to learn how to form a thoughtful looking face then come out with the same pish every time <ok>
 
If it fails when you get home take the hard drive out of the external casing and stick it in the freezer for a few hours, after a few hours take it out of the freezer and reconnect to the casing and plug it all back in. It helps with the spinning of the disc allowing you time to take the info and save it else where <ok>
 
then place in the centre of the oven on a medium heat for 15 minutes. allow it to stand 5 minutes before serving idealy with a crisp white wine.
