I remember in a televised game several years ago, Michael Owen went over in the box, the ref was about to point to the spot, but Owen rushed ocross to him and gestured to admit he'd tripped or slipped and there had been no contact or infringement.
I can just imagine Taarabt, Balotelli, C. Ronaldo and co doing that, can't you <yikes>
I know that's one extreme to the other but how refreshing it was to witness honesty by a pro footballer rather than cheating. <ok>

ironically, the term 'no nonsense' is completely the opposite of what they are! its all nonsense with them, eh guru?! i'd like to think of myself as a far more cultured centre half though my main position was the anchor role (not rhyming slang). i was compared to a thin jan molby <laugh>

Have to wonder why Robbie didn't blast the ball very high or very wide.
If his moral compass told him to own up to no contact being made what happened to that very same moral compass in the next minute or so?

Absolutely agree. I think arshavin did something very similar in his first season in the premiership. He fell, the ref gave the penalty to arsenal and arshavin visibly protested this.

I would love to see more players try hard to carry on playing despite an infringement instead of collapsing as if they've just received a right hook from David haye. Often it could result in a better opportunity than a penalty or freekick.

I've also recently seen a clip of when di canio was at west ham. An opposition defender received an injury, west ham continued playing and it was crossed to di canio. Instead of playing on he caught the ball stopping the play and allowing the injured player to get attention.

Incidents such as the ones with fowler, arshavin and di canio really should be applauded.

Maybe some sort of incentive should used to encourage players not to go down.

I think that what is being implied by 'he has every right to go down' is, although I don't agree with it, he's been fouled but it isn't obvious so he should go down to make it easier for the referee to go down.

What also annoys me is, as has already been mentioned, Howard Webb saying the player should o down to make it easier for him. Other refs don't do this, so where's the concistency?

One example being Richardson fouling a Liverpool player and not being sent off for a clear red card offence then Barnett being sent off for a very soft foul outside the area.

I remember during a world cup qualifier against Holland (Do i not like that!!), when Platt went down a tad too easily.
Jimmy Greaves went apeshit, saying something along the lines of, that he was a disgrace to the England shirt and that a real player would have stayed on his feet and scored, just because he was proud to be English. He said that he wished anybody except Platt would have stayed on their feet and he firmly believed that if Platt hadn't have gone to Italy, he would not have gone for the easy option.
