As a bloke, a commentator or both? He's an alright bloke on his own but put him in a group or with ****ing Swannie then his sycophancy knows no bounds. I also think their radio double act is appalling and as an aside I can't think of any other football club in the U.K. to who thebeeb would assign an analyst whose only interest is their most hated rivals.
All about personal taste but that's the worst part about it for me. Zero insight, zero thoughtful analysis and instead we hear "YAK YAK YAK" and talks about nights out. It's ****ing shambolic.
I don't really mind that. I'm less keen on Peter Swan than I am on Burnsy, but I generally think having a non-City fan on these things has its advantages. It makes for a less fawning approach to things in some respect. There may be better non-Hull City fan options out there than Swanny, but the premise of having a non-fan in that job isn't necessarily wrong. I've heard passionate fans commentating on their teams up and downtime country and it's often unprofessional and tedious.
As the saying goes, for those who hate Burnsy and Swanny then be careful what you wish for and in my humble view what a big mistake this will turn out to be. Sit back and enjoy 1) Viking FM being scared ****less of upsetting the Allam family. Commercial Radio is incredibly (though understandably) thin skinned when it comes to losing or upsetting commercial sponsorship or income. 2) The constant adverts and 3) References to Hull City Tigers and/or no references at all to Hull City. Perhaps, there is no agreement on point 3, but I will be interested to see what happens with the name. I suspect Steve Jordan may have had a hand in this somewhere as well as the BBC RH team upsetting them.
As a commentator / radio personality , never met him personally - it is swanny I can't stand listening too , I guess I just link Burnsy and City together as he's been on the radio for about 80% of the time I've been going
Indeed, I'm not suggesting we get a fan as a co-commentator, my point was you used being an obvious Arsenal fan as a stick to hit Gibbons with.
People do seem to forget Alex Burgess, who was ten times better than these 2. Gareth Roberts was better as a co-commentator whenever I heard him. On the flip side there was a brief period of a guy who was worse than the lot. Think he used to be a ref or something. I remember one away game when he 'celebrated' a goal for a good 45 seconds only for the listener to realise well down the line that it had hit the post and the game had carried on.
Always listen to Burnsy before and after the game, so sad to lose something else from the match day ritual. Quite enjoyed listening to Marco Silva run rings round him last season. Wonder if Burnsy will still go if he has to get his own tickets rather than on the Beeb.
Gibbins would bring Arsenal into everything to an extent that I don't think Swanny really approaches from what I hear.
I do remember despising the man, he'd often go on about how tiny Hull City was compared to the likes of Plymouth Argyle.
I've made my feelings for Burnsy and Swanny well known for a long long time. Can't stand listening to the pair of them on the radio during a game. How anyone can defend their buffoonery as anything less than a waste of ****ing time, and insulting to the listener is baffling. That is on the rare occasions I could listen, without paying money, for a **** service that more often than not simply didn't work. It might have improved in recent years, but judging by posts on here over the past few years, it did not. Naturally the usual handful will make this about the Allams being vindictive, and of course anyone not agreeing with that small handful will be sycophants, arse lickers, or worse. Burnsys' support for local music seems sound, and he seems to know a lot about that, and is good at promoting it. Commentating on a football game is not his thing. Add in that **** Swanny, and its a recipe for disaster. The truth is, for anyone outside of Hull, local BBC coverage is a waste of time. The other truth is, anyone else can be better than the 2 cockwombles who commentated on RH. They're an embarrassment. For the many people outside of the RH coverage area, and anyone who enjoys listening to football on the radio, this is a positive move.
Radio and media are part of my professional background, and in my experience ILR does not spend the money nor applies the same production values to the coverage of sport at a local level. That's not true of every single station and network, but pretty much the case. If you think that you will get insight and analysis and the level of player/manager access that we are used to - forget it. It will start out that way for sure to draw in listeners, but it won't last, it will get pegged back over time to save money and maximise income. ILR stations simply do not have the staff to cover it. If Viking are investing in this area, then great, but that remains to be seen. This is certainly not a criticism of ILR, because essentially the product of those stations is 'the audience' to be delivered to advertisers. The programmes/music are the bait. If you enjoy the constant and repeated ads at the expense of the stuff we are used to and I know many folks will do - then fair enough, absolutely go for it! You are right in one big respect BCC, it depends on whom they get as presenters. You need characters not just 'experts' to make these things work and getting that balance right will be very important. I guess we'll see! I will be more than happy to be wrong about this.
****ing hate adverts ... Tell me the last positive these ****ers did for the supporters? Everything they do seems to have a negative repercussion to the fans .. and naturally the handful will make it about defending these ****s.
Just to be clear I'm not advocating Viking get exclusive commentary over Radio Humberside, I'd be happy with the latter staying and removing Swan and if required Burns so we can have a legitimate commentary and analysis service.
It's not on FM, there's going to be adverts and they'll probably be forced to call us Hull City Tigers. That's the negatives.
