I've heard this name mentioned a fair few times in the last month or so, then saw this on the BBC Website.

Interesting concept. Looked into them, and subscribed to the channel on Youtube. Watched their first game highlights. Bit of fun, pretty entertaining. I can see why it's kicking off for them. Pardon the pun.

What happens when you "subscribe" to a youtube channel? Do you have to pay a monthly/annual subscription?

Nope Dave. You just get notified when they post new content. Also just collates all your subscribed channels together so it's easy to look through the videos they upload. No money involved. It's just like "Following" someone on twitter or "liking" a page on Facebook.
