Match Day Thread Hapoel Be'er Sheeva vs Southampton 29/09/2016 Kick-off 6pm

To be fair to Hesketh I don't think it ended up being like-for-like in the end, I think it was a change of shape. Be'er Sheeva matched up very well against us (as Sparta should've done if they turned up) with a spare man at CB and DM, and no-one was getting wide enough to try and create 2 on 1s against their wingbacks. When Dusan came on he seemed to indicate to Long and Redmond they were to play in a 3 (JWP was even playing left wing when Redmond came off), and stuck on the right touchline immediately and hardly moved as opposed to his usual roaming in possession under Puel. For the rest of the game we seemed to be working almost entirely down the right where we had the space with Tadic and Martina and they had no-one to suited to tracking Cuco. We still toiled in general of course but we at least retained the ball and it gave us an actual route into their third.

Credit to Claude for changing it though, glad to see some flexibility.

 

As I said before, I'm beginning to like the cut of Puel's jib. Too many fans expect perfection instantly....the best managers in the world make errors and lose matches...Puel shows he is flexible and still learning about the squad. Whilst he is doing this, we haven't lost in the last 5 games, including 2 in the Europa Cup.

I've gone on record before in saying that Puel will prove to be a good manager for us. He just keeps proving it. His experiment with Hesketh was merited. It didn't quite work, and as another poster said neither was the set up. But Hesketh has been blooded in Europe; his manager has supported him and the team has been shown they have a manager who can be decisive.

I agree that it may have been an error to start him but fair play to Puel for acting quickly and making the change before ht. Deserves credit for that.

Looking back at last night, it actually was a pretty good result overall. Clean sheet , no injuries and with a few major players rested for Sunday. We'll beat that lot at home , steal a point or so off inter and things are looking positive.

 

Definitely a good point and agree we will beat them at home.

As I said last night, provided we do beat them at home then that gives us 7 points.

Then we would likely only need 1 win from the two Inter games and Prague away to qualify.

On Europa League website, we are second in table, so presumably GD doesn't count...must be alphabetical. How many teams go through from each group....couldn't find that. Is it top and a few second placed teams?
