I'll move this if someone points me at a more appropriate existing thread, but ffs, these people really need to give their head a shake.

Anyway, in this non-gender world, aren't the BBC the ones being sexist by assuming handbags are only associated with one type of person?

BBC football pundit suspended for referring to players' scuffle as 'handbags'
BBC pundit Steve “Tommo” Thompson described an incident in the recent clash between Swindon Town and Lincoln City as "handbags", landing himself in hot water with the broadcasting giants.

It gave rise to concerns...What concerns?

I wonder if that is all he said.
Surely he hasn't got suspended just for that phrase.
A couple of spot on comments from that article ....
- The BBC should pay more attention to songs on their stations promoting knife crime and drug use.”
- the BBC has is completely out of touch with society. They would rather pander to the small minority who will be offended at anything. It needs to stop and stop now and those at the BBC making these decisions sacked.

Who complained? Someone who self identifies as a handbag?

Heaven help the commentator who refers to a player being a big girl's blouse.

Every person with the last name Thompson or Thomas, seems to be known as ‘Tommo’.
Isn’t that one of Burnsy’s regular lines?
Can someone point me in the direction of cancelling my TV license. I’m offended by the BBC!

The problem with an apposition such as 'big girl's blouse' in the English language is that it is impossible to tell to which noun the adjective applies.

Is it the girl who is big or the blouse?

It could even refer back to the subject (for example if the timid, flakey player the commentator is describing is a particularly large person who is perceived as being merely a girl's blouse).

This adds absolutely nothing to the Tommo Vs The Beeb debate by the way.

I'm just bored.

They also play songs with extreme racist terms used by black singers against white people. ALL racist terms used should be stopped given air time no matter who uses them and who it’s against. Racism is from all walks of life against all walks of life. There should never be any exceptions. The BBC should remember this when the get on their high horse. I couldn’t believe what I heard on Radio One. Deeply offensive ( not to me I couldn’t give a ****, been racially abused hundreds of times, water off a ducks back, and I am white and middle aged) term used in a song and played on the breakfast show. BBC are hypocrites

They still play this, obviously oblivious to what they are on about. Maybe they think they are talking about that sugary treat which was popular at one time.

In solidarity of their lesser known colleague, every commentator should be challenged and encouraged to include the term 'handbags' at least once during a game to show what a waste the BBC has become on people's money....
