Yep, cutting the apron strings could be just the tonic he needs. He doesn't really fit with the Whitmarsh/Button love-in anyway. Three's a crowd and I think Lewis is getting crowded out.

Maybe the story was leaked to test the waters, see what people say and if anyone comes out of the woodwork ;)

I really don't think this move will be motivated by money. I think Mercedes have big plans, they have started by getting their back room staff up to spec, check out the amount of good people they employed just before this season started.

Added to their improvement in back room staff the fact that McLaren will become a customer team next season, and also the salary they can offer, I do think it makes sense for Lewis to move. It won’t be instant success, but I really do think that there is solid foundations of a top team at Mercedes already.

    Ted Kravitz ‏@tedkravitz

Lewis Hamilton won't deny he has an offer from Merc: "The manager's job is to go in, get to the final point [offers] and then we'll decide".

Fuel to the fire being added by one and all, is the smoke about to turn into a full blown flame?

I'd be interested to hear your opinion of Di Resta, Max Whiplash, but perhaps it would be a bit off topic for this thread.

I thought he didn't have enough money to keep paying for his seat for the rest of this season, so no idea about 2013!

That's too bad. He nearly had a podium in the 9th best car once :(

Too bad that it's all about money now.

In short, I think he's a kind of confidence trick: he furrows his brow, talks with sleep-inducing seriousness, as earnest as Hemingway, and people believe he must be special 'cos he acts that way. On track though, he's just fair-to-middling: has he ever wowed you during a race?

But you're right, it's off-topic. Maybe we need a thread for him and the insomniacs amongst us ;)

Interesting, thinking about it its kind of a good trick. If you sound like you know what your on about the less informed believe you do.

Now you mention it there are few times I ever really notice him on track. I was impressed with his Bahrain performance this year other than that I forget he's there until one of the commentators says he's very mature for letting some driver pass him and not get involved in the battle when he's driving a different race.
