Not very neighbourly, considering that without the points we regularly donate to you you'd be deep in the brown stuff. A word of thanks would be in order
Ted I will tell you another difference between the Millwall game and the Wycombe one. For the Wycombe game, I sat in the lower East not far from the tunnel. The players got absolute dogs abuse that night at full time. Marcus Bent and Reed himself were singled out. Maybe in the days when we got 20,000 plus for Wycombe, those "plastic fans" had higher expectations ? I loudly booed the team off from my seat in the CE last Saturday, booing Powell in particular. Trust me, I wasn't alone. I looked down to the North Lower, and there were actually a handful of our utter numpty Bovril slurpers CLAPPING Morrison etc, when they had the gall to come over Imagine that.....clapping !
Which one was that then? Your end wasn't full. You accuse Morrison etc. of having the 'gall' to come over and applaud the fans after the final whistle. Would you rather they had scuttled off down the tunnel without acknowledging the fans at all? At the end of every game, win, lose or draw, the players go over to the fans and applaud them for their support. It can't have been easy for them on Saturday when they know they're going to get dog's abuse. And just to be clear, I'm not trying to get you to pity them, nor am I trying to defend them too much; they were awful and the fans had every right to boo them.
I've thrown away my match-day program, but it featured an article by the club's head of finances (or whatever his title is). He seemed quite pleased with the way we are trimming our finances, and finished by saying that the future of the club was the Academy, which was why they were putting 1.8m a year into it, if I remember correctly. The 3 new contracts (Solly, Pig and Pope) seem to bear this out. When he said this he was not just giving his own opinion, but the agreed club policy. Agreed also by me which is neither here nor there. The problem for me is the difference in style of play between the Academy and the first team This is illustrated by the criticism Pig has received for his poor jumping for high balls. In all the time I've been watching him play for the U-18's and U-21's he's not had to jump for long balls, because the ball has been played to his feet Now the last thing I want to see is the kids launching the ball skyward, but some continuity of style would be helpful. Likewise Harriott had been playing just behind 2 strikers, extremely effectively, yet he has never played there for the first team, and was brought on last saturday at wide right, where he NEVER used to play.
Actually,I think it deserves a lot of credit that they did'nt run off but faced the fans after amatch they knew we were desperate to win. Sorry Volly but I think you're way off line with this. As an example, when Dartford got beaten at newly promoted Halifax this season (trounced would be a better way of putting it) a couple of the new players came over to thank the fans after the game. Meant a lot to them, and the comparison with the older faces who went straight to the changing rooms was a poor one.
I have to agree with VaV on this one. going to the fans rather than down the tunnel in the event of a defeat is a little like trying to avoid the music they will face in the dressing room. I dont agree with booing, but fans should just walk away and not applaud poor performances, it might suggest to the players that the standard was acceptable.
Really? They're going to face the music in the dressing no matter how long they take out there. And I doubt Powell will have been giving them the kind of dog's abuse they were getting from the fans.
Yeah, there was no way getting to the changing room five minutes later would make CP forget what had just happened on the pitch, and I doubt his language would be the same as a really riled Addick fan given what had gone on for ninety minutes.
If I were a pro-footballer, I would expect to receive dog's abuse for a poor performance. However, if it were on a personal level, I would jump into the crowd Cantona-style and dish out some of my own abuse. That's just how I roll, you see.
