He's a candidate on the Euro elections list, so maybe he's hoping to bravely run away.

I asked exactly the same question yesterday, and the answer was, yes, it was David, and he tweeted about it apparently. He was recommended [by Poch presumably] and was doing all the translation for that news conference.

I was lucky in the sense that my eldest brother was a motor engineer, now long since retired. A fair bit of what he knows he has passed to me, so that one almost begins to know certain things instinctively. Plus you can pass the experience of being resourceful into many other areas.

For example, I run a late 1980's rear engined VW Transporter for occasional jobs, tasks and leisure. For a few months it has had a small coolant leak. Now anyone who knows these old rear engined motors knows that they can suffer coolant problems. It's partly because they are not a true watercooled engine, but really an air-cooled design in a water jacket. Anyway, it suffered a big failure a couple of weeks ago, as a part called the coolant distributor burst. To replace this via a garage would be £2-300 plus consumables. After buying the part [£28] I did it in an afternoon lying under the vehicle chatting with my brother.

There were no real surprises. It was awkward, a bit dirty, but do-able, and we found out that the water pump could also do with replacing [it was shot to... ], simply by listening to it and testing [belt off, run engine for a few seconds. Tell-tale noise gone]. That'll be another £36, but it could have been a very nasty surprise from a garage or they could have missed it. We'll need to refill the coolant system [that's fun on a Transporter], but I have learned a little more of my capabilities, and have become slightly more resourceful as a result. It's not a fun thing to do, but I like to know that I'm not helpless in the modern world.

And, in truth, it wasn't that difficult either. :)

What was the car, by the way..?

Oh, that's a shame. Always liked him, ever since On The Move, with Donald Gee.

MG ZT-T, 2002 (1.8 petrol turbo). I bought it because I like the way it looks (beautiful body, 18inch alloys as standard, half leather interior) and is essentially a cheap "luxury" car (electric windows, parking sensors, etc). I knew about the reputation of Layland and Rover/ MG, but that's mostly nonsense. What I can't do myself I have a couple of reliable "cash-in-hand" mechanics to work on it for me, but really it's only had one problem. Like your VW van, it's all been centered around a coolant leak, and subsequent overheating problems because of this. This is my last year running it as I need something that isn't in the top end of the tax bracket and can do more than 25mpg, so any work I can do on it to keep it running, I'm seeing as valuable practice for my next car which will have to last me 10 years!

I have been avoiding big garages such as Halfords auto-centres and the like, because back in the early noughties when I didn't know any better, Kwik-Fit charged me £700 to do the brakes all round on a Peugeot 306.

Well it was, then Lorde came along and showed that perhaps you don't need to do that after all. There will be more that follow that trend.
