Guitars?

  1. I think I let it go for around £900. I had it advertised for over a grand for a while, with only a couple of enquiries. Then, a nice chap turned up at my door with £900 in his pocket and said that he really wanted it, so I let it go.

It was a real wrench, because it was a lovely bass. I lent it to our band's first bass player for a few weeks, and he loved it. I bought it because I liked the look of it, and with the intention of learning to play bass properly for my studio recordings, but my heart was never in it, and the time needed to master it detracted from my guitar playing. So, the Warwick just sat in the rack, gathering dust, which was a real pity.

I played a Warwick thumb bass on loan once, played it through a nice big Ampeg rig (1x15) x (4x10) at a festival gig where there wasn't time to swap over equipment. Really nice warm sound, but I found the fretboard a bit 'soft' for my liking. My Stingray has a nice bright maple neck, which really brings out the top end. That ampeg rig was amazing though.

  3. From memory, I think the fretboard on mine was ebony. I would agree that it played soft, certainly not ideal for slapping and popping. The superb thing about it was its chocolatey tones, very warm and mellow.

I prefer one of each myself. Tenor and Alto.

Baritone is not used much, and soprano is nice if you're Kenny G!...

My funk hero Maceo Parker played Alto, but I prefer the sound of a Tenor. We use the Baritone on Afro songs that are Fela Kuti inspired. I love it, but the only thing that pisses me off is that the Sax player can get lower notes than my bass !!

Technically, if you can play a sax, you can play a sax. Tenor, alto, baritone. I'm assuming soprano isn't too much different either.

I'm just more used to the balance of tenor and alto. They seem to compliment each other in most areas.
