Goncalo Amaral was given an 18-month suspended sentence by a court in Portugal. Clarence Mitchell, a spokesman for Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry McCann, said the couple thought the conviction "speaks for itself" and they would be continuing their legal action for defamation against Amaral. Mr Mitchell said: "While Kate and Gerry McCann will not be commenting on the court's decision, they will be continuing their defamation action against Goncalo Amaral. Today's conviction speaks for itself." The McCanns are taking action over Amaral's "entirely unfounded and grossly defamatory claims" in the media about the case, which included the allegation that Madeleine was dead and that her parents were somehow involved in concealing her body. In the separate case, Amaral was one of five officers of the Policia Judiciara (PJ) in Portimao, Algarve, charged over an alleged attack on the mother of another missing girl. The five men were accused of "scenes of aggression" against Leonor Cipriano, whose nine-year-old daughter, Joana, vanished in September 2004. The little girl's body was never found but Cipriano and her brother, Joao, were charged and convicted of her murder.She went missing from her home in Figueira, not far from where four-year-old Madeleine was abducted in Praia da Luz on May 3 2007. It was claimed the attack on Cipriano happened when she was questioned over Joana's apparent abduction. They shouldn't have been left on their own. Get a babysiiter. If you can't get a babysitter either take the kids with you or don't go out. It was a tragedy that quite simply shouldn't have happened, and wouldn't have if some simple precautions had been taken to put the safety and well being of the children first. That is a stark truth.
Nonsense. You can't go through life like that. The kids were checked on regularly. Kids get abducted when a parent turns his or her back for two minutes. You can't be with them 24/7.
Regularly checked? So whit. I widny do that in this country never mind a foreign place where you don't know who is hanging about. Didn't the McCann's say they noted some **** hanging about on the days leading up to her disappearance? Mibby yer right. Next time I babysit my nieces (6 year old twins) I'll put them to bed and **** off out for a pint. I'll come back and check on them half hourly.

Precisely. In what ****ed up world is it considered ok to leave kids alone. But, ye know, we checked half hourly. They were ok right up until the point they weren't.
If that was the case then it would mean they were been watched and bided their time for the coast to be clear to grab her. BTW I never doubted the McCann's story till I started to read stuff here,GC took away my innocense.
My two are 13 and 11 and I wouldn't do it, I have left the eldest for an hour or so before, not to get pissed up mind you. Baby twins and a toddler alone in an appartment in a foreign country is criminal.

There comes a point when you can leave kids on their own. None of those three were anywhere near that age.
So we are in agreement that although the McCanns were very very stupid, the did not kill her accidentally or otherwise? I thought so. Case closed.
