There's two ways to look at this:
i.) That's what happens if you ignore your criteria for entry, as only Germany and Holland actually met the criteria for the Euro
ii.) Letting countries that could charitably be described as "poor" join the Euro (which is what Greece, Cyprus, Portugal, Spain and Italy always were) is only going to cause problems

Poor!!! I don't think so, it's the mix of economy types more than anything.

Cyprus had a booming economy before it joined Europe. The main reason Cypriots voted yes to Europe was because they thought the EU would sort out the Turks and get them out. They have been sunk by their banks supporting Greece. Mediterranean countries have a quite different culture to Northern Europe and mixing these two in a financial arrangement was always going to lead to problems.

Most of the wealthy Cypriots removed their money a year ago notso, it wasn't hard to see what was coming. This is one of the reasons the local banks are in trouble.

Typical, the rich given a heads-up before the rest of us, nothing new really. Millions allowed to be moved by some, but the rest that want a few grand out suffer.

I was still working in the City when the Euro idea first came along. Without getting too technical, we all knew that it was politically motivated, politically driven, and an economic nonsense.

I can still remember the day Greece was invited into the single currency. We sort of all said, " Germany and Greece have the same currency, interest rates, etc?? How's that work then"? - the short, simple answer of course is, it doesn't!..

It's no stupider than deciding to have one army and many commanders.
