There are so many cliched De Niro scenes that you could use, here's a less understated one but none of the less, less powerful. A testament to the greatest actor of all time and a scene from the wonderfully less acclaimed film ... 'A Bronx Tale.' It was a directorial debut for De Niro and written by the great actor who played the mobster ... Chazz Palminteri. If you haven't seen it, I urge you to. It's a masterpiece.
Okay...you lot won't like this, so please stop reading here I have played this game many times....and although my favourite film of all time is Dr Strangelove (thank you Stan for starting it all off with this most awesome ever made film) My real film genre love is animation. In fact my most favourite film clip I can't/ wont put up because it is just to emotional for me to watch (The death of Fiver in Watership Down) So here is my second most favourite clip. The last petal falling in the 1991 animated version of Beauty and the Beast (why the @@@@ they remade it I have no idea!). Still brings a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes 25 years later I won't say "enjoy" because I know you won't
You can't stereotype us all Beth..... this will bring a tear to anyone other than a sociopaths eye. And it's animated! Sorry about the rubbish at the beginning and end. Oops that's a crap version, I'll have to find a better one.
OMG ......Stan the start of UP (the bit in the hospital, the buying the tickets, the balloon!!!) I cried so hard when the sequence ends as it does...I was just so shocked....the whole sequence is so lovely Pixar really took a real risk on this film actually starting so very dark. But they were rewarded with a "Best Film" oscar nomination...only the 2nd film after Beauty and the Beast to be nominated. Won 2 awards (Best Long animation and best score). I find Dug the dog one of the best characterisations ever...."Squirrel"
I was trying to find a stand out scene from Spirited Away as well, but I can't, the whole thing is just genius. I watched Up on a plane for some reason (must have been a dearth of gross out comedies or sci fi action with which I usually numb my brain in such circumstances), and had to pretend I had something in my eye. I didn't find it dark though, just beautiful. Like Spirited Away every scene in Withnail and I is just about perfect. Here's the only one which isn't stand out funny. Rather lovely though.
And another one to make a grown man cry. It 1940s, black and white and sub titled, so I'm guessing that not many have seen Bicycle Thieves though many will have heard of it. Amateur actors in post war Rome, a man and his son desperately search for his stolen bike, vital for him to work. In the end, his desperation gets the better of him. Can't think of a better depiction of humiliation on film. The boy is wonderful. Spoiler alert if you want to watch the whole thing (it's on YouTube).
My favourite sports movie. "These guys are are a ****ing disgrace!" "bring your kids, we got entertainment for the whole family!"
Ok you sentimental old lags! That's enough crying into your beer! How about some bits of films that shocked/ changed/horrified you? Apart from several scenes from 'Scum' ( which I sneaked into the pictures at 14 to watch having bought a ticket for another film and which persuaded me that petty crime wasn't so pretty) this has got to be the scene from a film that shocked me the most - don't think I ever hitch hiked again.
