Read Peter Hitchens in the MoS on the subject. He's a rabid right-winger, but he's spot on. As to David Milliband- the fact that Blair, Mandelsohn and Murdoch wanted him says everything.

If Ed Miliband happens to cost Labour this election they must look at their leadership selection. They should know that
    they cannot fool the voters.:emoticon-0148-yes:

Had an interesting conversation with some dude in the sauna at the gym yesterday. Self-employed builder, property developer (said, by others in the gym, to now be worth @£2m), and as natural a Tory as you'll get out of the aristocracy. In essence he bemoaning the Tory plans to cut carers allowances, as his wife received them to care for her 81 year-old mother. His line was that she had no property or assets, and they were seriously thinking of dumping her on the state (me and you) as putting her in the cheapest of homes would cost @£750 a week.

Pick the moral bones out of that one to your heart's content, but two things strike me:-

The 'benefits' system is not just about feckless single-mothers with fourteen kids and 60" TV's.

We pull the benefits rug from under everyone, and we, as taxpayers, may well end up paying a higher bill to house the builder's mother-in-law and the single-mother's fourteen children.

Most importantly, quite a few Tory voters have cottoned on to this too - a bit like the Tories for years saying that businesses should never rely on subsidies to survive (such as the mines), yet ensuring that mainly Conservative farmers always get their EU wedge.

I really don't know who to vote for! They say it's the closest election in years but that's because people don't want to vote for any of them.

I still think there should be a no confidence vote so that people who do not want to vote for any of the parties can be counted.

Interesting debate to be had there.

I'd wager that the builders Mum did have her own owned home at some point btw, and he got it transferred to his company to ensure she had no assets in the event of needing full time care, as that's another common occurence that the savvy amongst use to protect their assets from the clutches of the tax man / local authority. As if she had a house in her own name the council would put a charge on it, so that they got a large proportion of their care costs back from her estate.

  17. You're right, it's not just benefit cheats but they are only cost a small percentage compared to the companies not paying correct tax levels. It doesn't help that this country has massive wide opening double batard doors for every Tom, Dick and Harriet to stroll through before claiming said benefits including a fricking house without ever paying into the system! Much like me with food, this country needs to learn to say "I'm full" <laugh>

  19. IMO, this is another reason the private NHS approach could work. If it was privatised, we'd opt to pay an insurance type setup like most do with their pets. This could cover care costs later in life too.

PS...when I say privatised, I don't mean sell it off like they did with British Gas so later on we can get arse ****ed. I mean keep it with the governments control but introduce costs to help subsidise the expense and stop the pathetic reasons people visit doctors / hospitals that waste doctors time. It should also look at stopping people visiting this country purely to get free health care too!

The entire system needs looking at imo, as there's massive inefficiencies in the current system and money is being pissed down the grid in some areas whilst at the front line it's seemingly often under resourced.

A third of all of our tax goes to the NHS and yet in my case I have private health cover and I can't even get an NHS dentist if I wanted one, so I pay for both on top of what I contribute without option via PAYE. That's never right in my book.
