Brilliant article below for those of us of a certain age, which is a lot of us on here, let's face it. Hope the new film lives up to it, and they even have a poster from the City Hall in the article. Anybody on here go to that? https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/0/big-daddy-giant-haystacks-wrestling-rivalry-shook-britain/ Magic stuff.
I can remember when i was probably about nine going to see giant haystacks fight at withernsea pavillion one summer holiday. We had front row seats but were asked to move before it started as he was going to throw the other bloke out the ring at our side. How on earth did he know this in advance...a true professional
I saw Big Daddy v Giant Haystacks ‘wrestle’ live, but not in Hull It was Great Yarmouth I think Their bouts did seem seaside town highlights (I think I saw one of the in Rhyl too, but I don’t think they were both there then) Could be wrong though...it was a million years ago
The film looks ****ing awful. It’s the EXACT same formula of so many British films: - ambitious money obsessed businessman threatens to close something - ragtag group of loveable everymen create an against odds plan to scupper plans - said group succeed against the odds. An actual documentary style speaking to people from the day would be a great watch.
An uncle of mine knew all these wrestlers, he was involved in promoting or something at Madeley Street Baths. I am not sure what his involvement was, as he was a bit of a black sheep in the family, so we rarely ever saw him.
Maybe your Dad knew my uncle, I went once or twice to watch, it was more entertaining listening and watching the old dears shouting abuse at the wrestlers than watching the wrestling.
Maybe I don’t think he did it more than a couple of times, so was probably just standing in for someone I only remember because I recall him telling me about the ‘scripts’ for the fighters to follow (sorry to burst anyone’s bubble!)
I used to go watch the wrestling there, and at Tiffany's. Saw most of the big names. It was more a pantomime than much else, but good fun at the time.
Bit off topic but I saw some digitally remastered photos of boxing matches from the early 1900's the other day. They didn't **** about back then.
Mr Hatem , has fanciful recollections even to this very day in the bathtub with his uncle getting a rear naked neck choke. Ah What a Wrestler.
My parents watched it every week on ITV at 4pm on Saturdays. Were they the only ones, apart from Kent Walton, who thought it was all real?
