The WUM part of me wants to make some provocative comment,
but when I think of the situation at GCCC, the ice-rink and Filton
airfield I just wonder why our great city cannot get these things
right and provide great facilities for its residents.

I wonder how much longer Steve Lansdown's patience will last before he just says '**** it' and this is not just about Bristol City FC
Why can't this City get it right about anything ?
Because after decades of being soft and doing **** all of any use, the whole country (especially the city council) is now just full of liberal thinking, politically correct ****ers who would rather rehabilitate the murderers and *****'s in society than lock them up and throw away the key. So when it comes to a handful of NIMBYS fretting about something that would actually benefit the city, the council will bend over backwards to appease them rather than do the right thing for the vast majority.
Anywhere with any sense of responsibility and imagination would just laugh the NIMBYS out of court
Also explains why we have no decent or affordable public transport, why we don't have a truly international airport (rather than just calling themselves it in the title), decent concert venue, speedway track/team, and scores of other stuff, it's because some bastard will always say 'I don't want it' and the do-gooders at the council will always listen.

Angelic I do love your fact about the airport as it is true. We have Bristol International airport but its very misleading as it isn't in Bristol and does not play to many International destinations as the runway is not long enough for the bigger aircrafts to use it.
I would have thought the best solution would be to use the current airport for European destinations like it already does and then convert Filton into the international airport as it has the runway there already and is a good destination given the closeness to the motorway and would give a use to such a historic site. Surely that would be easier than trying to build yet another terminal at the current airport and hvaing so many restrictions on it.

It's not Bristol City council who is to blame for this debacle,although the Libby liberals didn't help,it's a complete farce and at a risk of boring people, if I was Steve Lansdown I'd pull out and tell 'em all to stuff it.
Okay,nobody invest's capital without trying to make a profit but look at the employment,leisue facilities,homes,landscaping,modernization,sports stadium and hope he is trying to create in a very deprived section of our City,it would put us on a par with Cardiff,Swansea,Coventry,Liverpool to name a few and it was all being paid for by private funding,think of the losses of revenue being lossed by local taxes,income taxes,retail revenue and tourism.
The only people making anything out of this are the Nimbies,Green Facists,Laywers and the majority of good citizens will be deprived as usual.

Angel and Andy have it in a nutshell. The self important members of BCC are more worried about their personal re-election issues than progressing the ridiculously backward facilities in this City.
Isn't it sad when our sport is held ransom by greedy lawyers and footballers agents? Line your own pockets and to hell with the real people seems to be their credo.

Isn't rehabilitation a good thing? I mean fair enough the stadium situation is ridiculous but I really don't think you can blame the murderers and the *****s, god knows they've done some awful things but it's not like you have to make a choice, on one hand rehabilitate on the other 30,000 seater football stadium,is it?. I'd like to imagine that in today's world we can have our stadium whilst having a good crack at rehabilitating a few murderers and *****s on the way..or is that too much to ask? Also "do-gooders" are bad-dooers if they're doing bad not good...innit
I guess regardless of the outcome this will probably still not even be the end of it, as when it doesn't go their way yet again they will then take it to the European courts, so think we might be still here in a few years 
filton airfied would've been a good place for the airport its got one of longest runways in the country but no local residents complained and now look whats happening to it.

no. it just means it will take longer to sort out. if this judical review was not granted then you would be ok. but as its been granted its now going through the courts. now depends on the judges decision which i presume the losing party can appeal etc. could go on for ages.
shiny,as has been said,it's all now going forward as legal process,our chances are still strong but the opposition are using every legal trick in the book to prolong the decision,if we (Steve Lansdown) stay patient and strong we should eventually get there, remember we've still got good old Ashton Gate to fall back on if necessary and the Williams and East End expansion plans are still available.....
At the risk of being boring cos I've said it before, but being exiled in Cardiff I see what good facilities do, in Cardiff their is an international stadium, a new football stadium, athletics tracks!, white water centre, two good music venues, international cricket ground to name but a few and it has become one of the better places to live in the UK. What hope my home town if we can't even get a football stadium off the ground. Ok so Cardiff is a capital City but only half the size of Bristol and isn't Bristol the capital of the West?? Home Rule for Bristol that'sthe only option I think.
PS the draw back for Cardiff is that's it's mainly populated by the Welsh of course???

Forgetting the stadiums/ice rink/arena fiasco for a sec, Filton airfield had it all to offer - Massive runway, close to M4/M5, rail-link already to Parkway, but again it was a no no because of residents complaints.
Basically people living in Sadly Broke didn't want their Lego houses drowned in aircraft noise.
Lulsgate had a service to Canada back in the 70's but that didn't last long.
When it operated, I used the Continental Airlines route to Newark (New York) which is so much more convenient than using Heathrow, Gatwick or Birmingham for anywhere further away than Europe. That service has stopped too because the airline were only breaking even, and it hasn't been replaced despite the fact that several US airlines competed for it initially.
Continental were using Boeing 757-200's on the route to Newark which is the biggest aircraft that Bristol can take currently, altogether now 'because the residents dont want the runway extended because they're NIMBYS, and can't see further than the end of their nose, but again the city is left behind as a backwater because of it and the interest in Bristol as a destination for a biggie like American Airlines, Delta (two of the airlines originally considering bidding) or anyone else has evaporated.
Bournemouth airport has a longer runway than Bristol FFS !
