In my honest opinion Grant Holt is by far the best English striker this country has produced in the last 20 years and should be given an immediate call up to replace Rooney for the Euros. I cant believe that the England selectors have overlooked his undoubted talent for so long and I for one will be happy to sign any petition in the hope that they will see sense. Without his undoubted goal scoring ability the chances of England winning any major trophy in the foreseeable future looked doomed to failure.

Haha, the Ipswich board is normally like a graveyard, but one mention of Grant Holt and its active. In answer to your question on the first page Carra, they hate Holt for all three of those reasons.

I can remember people (not just us) calling for Stewart to be called up. There’s usually a newly promoted team doing well (two this season) who often have a striker doing well (two English ones this season). No surprise that Graham and Holt are attracting similar attention.

The difference this season is there’s an even greater dearth of English strikers than usual. If ‘Arry (I assume it’ll be ‘Arry) thinks either of them are worth a try I won’t complain, given the current competition for five places in the squad.

if its any consolation, i think graham should be in ahead of holt! swansea barely create any chances but graham's record is excellent. he's spent more time on the pitch than holt though so both have their merits. no doubt andy carroll will get a phone call later... <doh>

If Andy Carroll does get called up, I'll be wondering if Pearce watched that cup final on Sunday. (And no, not our one vs Manchester United!)

Ive got to agree about Carroll. Waste of space now just like Torres. What is it about Liverpool that does that? Long gone are the Owen and Fowler days!

I just have a suspicion that hefty price tags don't help.Scoring is all about confidence and expectations create nervouusness when in a scoring position.I agreed re Marcus Stewart I always thought that he was an underrated player.

But there is a bias against players who just put the ball in the net. This thread has demonstrated that there is a preference for those who do a few dinky bits before they score rather than just Wham,Bam into the net.

The problem is, Is that Grunts's style of play isn't suited to the international game. Just think how many free-kicks he would give away because continental refs think that football has gone non-contact! If internationals had only English ref's then yes he probably deserves a shot, but it isn't so he doesn't.

for once we can agree guru.

holt would get even more free kicks given against him than he currently does in the league, which is a lot! although he has earned the most, or at least he had done a few weeks ago. all i'll say though is that carroll and crouch have both had the same issues yet crouch has about 50 caps and carroll will no doubt be called up at some point again cos he 'plays for liverpool'. holt is a canny player, like sheringham was - i see no reason why he wouldn't at least give england an extra dimension to their forward play and if we were a goal behind with ten minutes to play, there would be none better to throw on to try and make a difference. he deserves a shot - its irrelevant whether we think he'd do well or not - he should be given the chance to show us all if he can because he has played so well for his club, unlike fraizier campbell!

As much as i love Holt and would love to see him play for England,I would put my mortgage on it ever happening. If he was 5 years younger maybe but not now.

The one thing I cant understand is the hatred you binners have for him.I can remember when Alan Lee played for you guys,I hated him at the time but thought to myself i would love to see him in a City shirt because of what he gave.I was proved right when he did play for us because he wore his heart on his sleeve and gave his all for us and for that he will always have my respesct. My God the things I used to call him when he played for you lot.I can even remember getting odd looks from City fans at Portman Road I was giving him that much abuse.

Im telling you lot right now.If he ever signed for you you would love him,and as much as you deny it on here you would secretly love him in your side.Just that a certain few havent got the bollox to admit it.
