Ha, what's funny is once you get a taste of the big payoffs, you're never the same. The Pick 6 is the Holy Grail to horse players here in California. The betting pools are ridiculously large. People partner up and pool their money for a chance. It took me years of close calls before I started hitting them. People mention my wins to me all the time, randomly, and often from unfamiliar faces. Few realize how much time and work I put into the journey. And how much total investment there was. If you're a horse player, check out the tracks in LA, it's where the action is.
The Masters is awesome. Can't wait to watch later today. It makes me sad tho, always spoke with my father during the tournament, he loved it so. Would do anything for one more of those conversations.
I'm not mate, it's purely recreational for me, the national and the odd slip into the bookies for a couple of £5 bets with the lads is all I go for, I'll not dampen the mood on here but personal reasons behind this one.
I don't play anymore if it means anything. I rarely discuss what I have won, and I never have here before. Gambling humbled and broke me. Life is better now, just not as interesting!
Sorry to hear about the other side of your experiences there Outlaw. Sounds like you've come through it alright though. You mentioning that made me remember about some of John Daly's quotes about his addictions I was reading yesterday. Now there's a guy who lives life right on the edge every single day.
Cheers, mate. I often think how my life would have turned out if I had made different choices, but that is a fruitless endeavor. I do know I put myself thru hell. Now I tend to my wife, my garden (my new addiction) and my dog.
Funny thing about John Daly, his living out of control finally came to an end on the golf course. He literally broke down, shaking uncontrollably. Had to be helped off the course during a tournament.
I like the odd flutter that's why I started the thread but like I said, I don't want the thread to go morbid. It's all good hearing about what people have won over the years though, I wasn't expecting anything like what you've revealed, that's nuts!
I had a mate won £25,000 on a football bet..he took six month off from his job as a taxi driver and went on the piss almost every day until it was gone.. He died 2 years ago aged 52..
I'm not one for a flutter on the horses usually. The odd Acca on the footie and on the National, where I pick my horses purely on name, number and colour of the jockey's jersey. That's the science behind my betting!! Personally never won big but a lad at uni won just under £3k when he bet on all 12 games in the championship and it came in.
Just the odd flutter for me as well. Me n the wife go to Sandown once a year to watch a band play, Bryan Adams is our choice this year and we have £30 each to blow on 6 races, when it's gone its gone so we normally do a fiver a race, it's what we put aside for that occasion so we can afford to lose it and if we win, well that's a bonus. The National will cost me about £20 again it's what I can afford to lose and its a once a year bet so it can't get out of hand. Hats off outlaw, couple of good stories and glad your happy with your lot now.
We're off to Ascot in June for the first time in June. Staying overnight. Really looking forward to it. One of the guys saves all his money up for this sort of thing and bets big each race. I'll be next behind him at the bookie, a few quid in-hand, going for the horse with a funny name
Why not mate, it's all about having fun. My wife picks her horses on names and colours and I reckon she wins more than me the cow
To be honest, I know it sounds daft, but I still feel awkward putting more than a tenner on anything. Not having 2 pennies to rub together for such a long time, it just feels bad giving it away to a bookie! The thought whacking on £50 or more, like some of my mates do, just appals me.
A tenner is the most I will put on a horse but like I said I have a budget to lose. Respect money too much to Chuck it away hence why we both have a set affordable amount to lose. It adds a bit of spice when your horse is in with a chance of winning
Same here mate. I see folks putting wads of 20`s over the counter and I just couldn`t do it. I wouldn`t be able, physically to let go of the money. They`d need a crowbar to get me fingers open. Been so skint for so long it just goes against the grain.
Not for me. Most maybe a friendly bet for a pint over a footy game. Gambling imo is for mugs. Thankfully never been bothered by it.
Got my horses for the morrow. Les Des Champs. Last Samurai. Druids Nephew & Soll (stadium of Light). Good luck to those that have a flutter.
that lot in a combination tricast would bring in a few quid - good luck with the bet ! notice the start time has changed -a 5:15 start now
