Shaper i have to agree he has always got it right up till now. I hope that if it is jones it works. But it worries me. He is a number 2. So he will have to find his own team and start working from scratch. Where as other possible managers are taking their own coaching team with them. It just doesnt seem to make sense to me. You have a manager learning about his players as well as the people he has employed as his assistants. Sorry, but i for one think this is doomed to fail. Also dont forget this guy has turned us down twice before. Once when Martinez left, Second before the appointment og Rodgers. well thats twice to many for me. That is the last i will say on it. If it is GJ i will get behind him.
Brendan was a Number 2 once! I don't care how wigan performed - Reading didn't perform well under Brendan MilfySigurdsson bang on with what you said mate! At the end of the day, if he has the right experience and right approach and can work with the team and drive our style - then he is a good way there.. As for who he can bring in, well i am not experienced enough to judge on that.... We could bring in a name even like some of the names bounced about and still end up not gelling and being relagated.... If HJ thinks Gj is the man then that's good enough for me...
Swans you are wrong Brendan was never a number 2. He was way down the coaching staff.Tthen he gained experience as a no.1 at 2 lower league clubs prior to be employed by us. Yes he done ok at one and not so well at the other. But he had started to gain experience in the transfer market, along with everything else that goes with being number 1. Jones has only ever been a coach and i admit a very good one at that. But he has no experience as a manager. That is a big risk to take when you are talking in terms of 90 million pounds.
Trunds - I thought that GJ was very much a big part of bringing in players in to Swans correct me if I am wrong.... And I thought Buck was Nr 2 at chelsea... again happy to be corrected.. I agree it's a big risk - and I don't know the answer, but neither does anyone else - as aside from Dai lol none of us have experience to really and honestly decide who is best.. All I know is that Our Board has done a fantastic job until know - They know the risks, I am sure there would be carefull consideration if they do pick him.... Don't get me wrong, they may decide the same as what you say and appoint someone else... I just hope that it is someone that follows on with our football and has the right approach with the guys... I honestly think one of the managers biggest challenges will be to steady the players and get their buy in... only 110% from them will keep us up - regardless of who we brought in... Once and if that is acheived - at that point the attracting players will be my concern - I hope by then if we are doing ok, that will sort itself out...
Swan GJ was a coach here and a very good one at that the recruiting was down to Martinez along with his scouting staff, buck was on the coaching staff but Clarke was no.2. I am just concerned that he has no experience as a manager. I want someone who has the same philosphy that we have now and is a must that we keep it. If we were recruiting GJ as a number 2 to a new manager ( yes i know it is not possible) i would jump at him. He also has to put some sort of coaching team together. I want someone comming in who has a ready made team, as liverpool have just inherited. This guy has also turned us down twice, but now we are obviously big enough for him. But as i keep saying if it has to be GJ i will support him
Some feedback. Quinn on talk sport asked who was Graeme Jones? Co presenter chipped in with, " Who are yah?" Who are yah?" Cue much laughter! Obviously, both were VERY surprised by our choice. Next programme up the presenters wondered what is it about Wigan, in that they are perennial strugglers but everyone seems to want their coaching staff. It was then suggested that we should save money and appoint Jones in March - obviously referring to the fact that Wigan don't start playing until then, when they drag themselves out of relegation by the skin of their teeth. Safe to say that these people were extremely underwhelmed by news of our possible appointment. In fairness, Leighton James then came on to say that Jones had many qualities (which we have discussed) that could see him make a success of the job. Okay, my thoughts in summary and I give due acknowledgement to those posters who have already mentioned some of my thoughts. PROS: Young, hungry and ambitious. Will be a cheap option. Huw knows him and is comfortable with him. Will be cheap. Jones knows the players, the club and the way we work. Will be cheap. Many of the the players will know Jones and respect him from his previous stint. Will be cheap. Rumoured to be the "power" behind the throne both at Swansea and Wigan. To what extent is debatable and unknown but he does have ability. Oh, and will be cheap. Has three years Premier League experience. Did I mention he will come cheap? CONS: Those 3 years were spent as an ASSISTANT coach. Ditto his time at Swansea. BIG jump to becoming Boss. Historically, far more people have failed doing this than succeeded. eg Kidd, Lee, Kean, Connor and others too numerous to mention. He is a ROOKIE. Well worth a gamble in the lower leagues where his mistakes would be made against the likes of S****horpe, Rochdale and Hartlepool et al but THIS learning curve will actually be against the League Champions; the Champion's League winners; Arsenal; Spurs, Everton, Newcastle, oh, and Manchester United and the rest of the teams in this cut throat Division. This is THE most critical season in our history. Handing the reins to someone completely untried as a manager in his own right, seems to be a foolhardy gamble. In my opinion, his lack of profile means that we will have a far more difficult job of attracting quality players to the Liberty than say the likes of Michael Laudrup or even Gustavo Poyet. Siggy, for instance, might come for Laudrup but, with due respect, no way will he come for Jones - and some existing players may well want to leave. His record at Wigan is pretty crass to be honest, in that he's been fighting relegation ever since he got there. If he's so good, WHY IS THAT? And that with Martinez there who some on this Board have been touting for a return. He might also bring that relegation mentality with him which is the last thing we need. We want to be kicking on and consolidating this season with an upbeat manager who fancies himself as a winner - much like Rodgers, actually. This could go on and on and I can see Jones being appointed before I finish Much more to say but I will place on record my appreciation of Huw's judgement so far; hardly put a foot wrong. But, on this occasion at least, I fear he (and the Board) has got it wrong. I think an untried manager of any description at this stage, is potentially calamitous for us; and I can see us wasting money by paying off Jones halfway through the season in a desperate attempt to avoid the drop. I can't tell you how much I hope I'm wrong about that but, if Graeme Jones is appointed, like any other fan, I will support him all the way and absolutely relish eating my humble pie if he proves me wrong.
Quote by Huw Jenkins,BBC Radio Wales,16.00,viz,"Grahame Jones is not the only person being considered for the Managers post". No further details provided.
the least inspiring of all the candidates ive heard - the premier league is not the place to be blooding assistant managers, he needs to start in the lower leagues and work his way up like everyone else - maybe one for the future considering his links with us but please Huw he is not the man. IMO we need to look abroad for someone who could continue our style - maybe Spain, where Rodgers was drawing all his inspiration from. If its jones then so be it , i ll get behind him like the majority
All the issues I have with this appointment is summed up really well in Ivor's post, thanks Ivor. I know that Jenkins has never got it wrong up till now, but there is only one thought on this appointment, and that is, it will be the biggest gamble the club have made this decade, Huw has done well with Rookies, but we were in the lower Leagues and Championship, to bring in a Rookie from a relegation side in the second season in top flight seems lunacy to me, and destined to failure. Those that say 'In Huw we trust' have a very valid point, no doubt about that, but Jenkins is only human, and is going to get it wrong at some stage, what worked in the lower league's won't do for the Premiership, and while we will be saving money (Cheap Option), it could well turn out to be an expensive gamble in the end. I can see why this has been done, because it releases funds for Stadium expansion, and Training and Academy facilities, but having looked at GM's career path, I fail to see where his connections will be other than Wigan. If this appointment doesn't inspire us as fans, how will it inspire the squad? At the end of the day, nothing we do or say will have an influence on this decision, and all we can do is give it our support, and hope that Jenkins and the board, have pulled off another great escape.....................
The way it goes, or seems so to me, you first make a noise about someone you do not intend to appoint, hence taking some interest away. Then you look for the one you want & get him, like laudrup or Zola. Who expected Rogers last time? It`s said that Jones has refused anyway.
Not bothered if Jones comes or not but if he actually declines , he's the biggest meat head the other side of the Atlantic !!
He doesn't play for us anymore, realise that he has mates still at the club but if they are interviewing over the weekend how would it be possible ? And why have interviews if jones has the job ?
