Cannot comment on that but I do recall it being said quite a few seasons ago about Brown. However injuries and new signings plus the lack of confidence have pushed him down the pecking order.
You are judging spearing far too early. With experience comes quickness of mind and improved technique when you play in the first team train with them you learn, from games you learn, what he has shown with his limited experience in top level football has been quite impressive. He can tackle, works hard, is quite sharp, I think he will get much better if he gets playing time.
Spearing reminds me of Sammy Lee, small of stature but big of heart. Like Sammy, a bit of an unsung hero. But as vital as a Rush,Dalglish or Souness to that great team. Spearing could become as important as Suarez,Carroll or Gerrard, without getting the publicity. He and Lucas made the two Arsenal "superstars" of Wilshere and Fabregas look very average.
I agree that Wes is different to the other two in that he has had his career cut short by injuries. But my main point is that they were all first team players at one time or another before being surpassed by a better player, be it due to not being specialised enough or being injured, and have evolved into squad players over time, often due to a lack of dedicated playing time in their best positions. Ultimately it's often impossible for fans to judge how good a player is going to be cos we don't get to see them in training or know what the manager has instructed them to do. A lot of youth players have been hyped up in their first couple of seasons only to fall short, and a lot of players who were written off have come good later on. It's very difficult to judge how well they'll do based on only a season or two, unless they're obviously highly talented, and even then it's hit and miss. Who expected Ronaldo to get WPOTY based on his performances from 03-05?
Swarbs Thing about Ronaldo, was he was blessed with the talent but not the physical strength up until 2005.He didn't glide across the pitch like a young Ryan Giggs where you only needed to be wirey. He was more direct where you need to be physically strong.Beckham on the otherhand at the same age was physically stronger as he was a natural central midfielder that ended up playing wide right.Ronaldo came into prominence when he developed that physical strength which occured as I said 2005-2006.
Why are we suddenly talking about Wes Brown and Man United? Is there any thread out there on this board that doesn't end up being about them? Anyway, to get us back on topic. I think there are some decent youngsters coming through. Obviously we've seen those in defence (Kelly, Flanagan, Robinson) but there are others like Sterling and Toni Silva who I think should get a game or two in pre-season. We haven't got any wingers, so I think those two could have a big part to play over the next couple of seasons.
