I can't speak for everyone Ron, just my impression of the place recently. quite a bit of negativity. Boxing thread and Cyc's comp about all I come on for now. Attivo does a cracking job with daily thread everyday but that doesn't seem to get too much use either. I appreciate that maybe the majority of forum members might be jumps fans but that's not much use to me as a tipping and discussion thread as I much prefer the flat
Must admit I prefer the flat. The purpose of the other threads was so that we could discuss anything amongst ourselves when there wasn't much going on the daily thread; they do at least seem to be serving that purpose. I'm afraid I'm guilty of not posting much on the daily threads. I'll try harder. The competitions seem to draw people in. Not sure what to do about the daily thread. Any ideas what we could do to improve the daily thread would be more than welcome.
Yeah, Swannie, I think you're right; and he's a laid back character with a real sense of dry humour. Good luck to him. If he never wins another Major, nothing can take away that special achievement last Sunday.
Couldn't all the political and economic threads go under the "discuss anything except racing thread" ??? I mean when people who want to talk racing click on to see this racing forum they are greeted with anything but racing. I can't see much new members attracted to it and It's kind of slowly killing racing discussion due to congestion of everything but racing. I'm all for discussing whatever people feel they want to talk about but is there a need to start a new thread for every day there's a shooting/murder/downswing in the euro etc. Don't shoot the messenger I'm just saying what I see.
Yes, Ron. Perhaps there are members who feel it's all a waste of time posting on this forum. Original Articles aren't really appreciated. Ask one of the best members, Cyclonic. I'm sure he'd acknowledge that. In fact, he'd probably feel like the gentleman below.... A female CNN journalist heard about a very old Jewish man who had been going to the Western Wall to pray, twice a day, every day, for a long, long time. So she went to check it out. She went to the Western Wall and there he was, walking slowly up to the holy site. She watched him pray and after about 45 minutes, when he turned to leave, using a cane and moving very slowly, she approached him for an interview. "Pardon me, sir, I'm Rebecca Smith from CNN. What's your name?" "Morris Feinberg," he replied. "Sir, how long have you been coming to the Western Wall and praying?" "For 67 years." "67 years! That's amazing! What do you pray for?" "I pray for peace between the Christians, Jews, and the Muslims." "I pray for all the wars and all the hatred to stop." "I pray for all our children to grow up safely as responsible adults and to love their fellow man." "I pray that politicians tell us the truth and put the interests of the people ahead of their own interests." And finally "I pray that everyone will be happy". "How do you feel after doing this for 67 years?" "Like I'm talking to a ****ing brick wall!"
I think that could be a good idea, STH, bung everything other than racing on the 'discuss anything' section? Think some pruning is necessary?
I am probably one of the 'sinners' as my punting which, whether we like it or not, is the main constituent part of most of our 'posters' interest in the 'cuddies' has dwindled since my retirement and consequent reduction in available cash; The Arc, Breeders Cup and the Cheltenham Gold Cup notwithstanding. I agree with the above suggestion. Apart from racing/betting threads all we need is the 'Lighten up' and 'Discuss anything but......' threads.
Threads have been merged under the "Discuss anything but ......................" thread. I have left this one as I assume it will just die away now that the event in question is over. I propose leaving individual threads for short-lived sporting events such as a golf tournament, Euro/World Cup etc. I've also left the boxing thread after nearly being lynched the last time I tried to move it
If I could just say a few words. I reappeared last week after not being on for a bit because of work commitments and was amazed that the only ‘recent’ horse racing threads were the daily threads – and that isn’t an exaggeration in the slightest. I really can’t see why if anyone has anything to say (be it horse racing or anything else) they can’t do so on the above mentioned ‘daily thread’. This certainly was the case in days gone by and it seemed to work bally well then. Surely, there is no new to start a new thread for every fresh bit of world news. As for that ‘boxing’ thread. Cor bally blinkin’ blimey it’s the campest thing I’ve ever seen!
The EU thread has been going for 2.5 years and would have kept going for another 2.5 years if not more. Can't say I fancy having to wade through all the other stuff to keep in touch. I always wanted the ability to have sub sections so that we could have had a non horse racing section with sub sections under that. That way only one non horse racing thread would be seen unless one actually went into the non horse racing section. That wasn't made available to us and the only alternative (other than to use the specific boards available) was to have a non horse racing index within the horse racing forum, which we have, and separate threads for each main topic (eg golf, boxing, politics) so that they were readily accessible. I agree that too many non horse racing threads are created but most soon disappear off the front page so don't see a problem. Some temporary ones could be mentioned in the daily thread, as suggested by Barney, or indeed in the "Anything But". However those that are ongoing and of specific interest should have their own threads. By those I refer to Golf (although we did use to have a well organised Golf section in the General Betting Board), Boxing, Politics, Share Trading. Share trading is a good example as it does disappear but anyone wanting to look through share trading chat can get there through the index. It would be impossible to search through a single merged thread. Maybe if there were more horse racing topics these large non horse racing threads might be kept off the first page. It's not my fault that some have proved so popular as to stay on the first page.
