No, I don't think 2 goals against League One opposition warrants JD a PL start. He's started plenty of games and been anonymous, against crap Europa League teams aswell. The 2 goals he scored were his favoured way, get half a yard and shoot, PL defences are well aware of Defoe. Last night once again he repeatedly fails to attack the back post when Bale's off on a left touchline surge, (Icannot believe one of those coaches of ours hasn't picked up on this) classic example was about 87 mins on the clock, Bale went past their player down the 18 yd box line, fizzed one over, Ade made a run to the near post, JD was on the pen spot watching all of it and just stood there like lemon, after it missed everyone at the near, only then does he make a futile effort by which time the cross is past the gaping net, sailing out for a throw! <steam> JD doesn't combine well with Ade or VdV imo, impact sub for me.

I couldn't believe it when nobody attacked that ball, Notso.
It was perfect and virtually impossible to defend, yet nobody took a gamble.

I disagree about Defoe and Adebayor, though.
They combine pretty effectively, though I prefer to see van der Vaart starting with our Togolese targetman.

I've seen it with JD time and time again PNP, he never attacks the opposite post, he follows Ade in the box everywhere, time and time again, 2 at the same post, looking for a ricochet or 2nd ball his way, honest to god his movement is **** at times, static...still disagree? :)

The best part of JD's game is his own directness, taking a player on to get a half a yard for a shot, any partner will always suffer from this.

They might build up a better understanding given a run in the side together though, Notso.
Not all partnerships instantly have that telepathic communication, some need work.

I get the impression that Defoe's always trying too hard when he's picked nowdays.
He knows that he's down in the pecking order and can't really do much about it, plus there's an international tournament round the corner, which might be his last.

Bents injury has done him a favour for England imo. I disagree with a run of games PNP, as I said JD's strongpoints are his directness and don't involve other team-mates.
