A regular browser but not contributor so not sure if I'm allowed to comment!

But as a Saints supporter for 30 plus years and ST holder have seen plenty of games and keepers in my time.

KD is a good shot stopped but there are aspects of his game that worry me and we will lose some points next season as a result, but that's the same for most keepers.

His kicking at times is awful and some decision making is poor at times. I like most think we need 2 new keepers as Forecast is dire. We definitely need one to challenge KD now and either a young understudy to both or an experienced pro - both which might well be happy with no expected 1st team game time.

A 25 man prem squad will invariably be made up of 3 keepers, 8 defenders / midfielders and 4 forwards - much like an intl squad. Yes there will be youth players to add to the list and some that can cover more than one position but no as a goalie.

When Southampton have had most success we had shilton and Niemi, KD is not in their class. Not saying we should be offloading him but to say any new keeper(s) must come in as no. 2 at best is naive.

Kelvin is a excellent keeper who is top drawer positionally and these days very rarely makes mistakes. For a 'small' keeper, he's better in the air than he often gets credit for. I'd be happy to play him next season, although we do need another keeper as Forecast is crap.

The sentiment that I am reading here is that any signing in any position should be at least on a par with what we have already, preferably better.

Why do we need three keepers? I can only remember one time when we've got down to needing the third keeper. Kelvin and some real back up is all we need. If we get to the once in a blue moon situation of having both those injured or suspended then use the emergency loan system or chuck in the youth team goalie.

Wise if KD got a long term injury and our no 2 got suspended you wouild be looking at Forecast against Rooney, Van Persie etc . Nuff said!

In the past three seasons Kelv has been named keeper of the year, twice in L1 and then again in the Championship. Clearly a sign of someone utterly hopeless

Pretty well. Not great, but certainly not bad. Looked rusty more than anything which isn't exactly unexpected.

His situation will be interesting. I can't remember if he was a Adkins or a Pardew signing.

Do we think with time, he can be a back up CB? He missed the entire Championship season, so it would be league 1 to Prem????

Apologies for diverting the keepers thread.

No one said he is hopeless - he is not. But that said a top class keeper is required in the PL. Even the 'weaker' PL teams have great keepers, it's the foundation for a solid defence. As a previous poster pointed out, we've had some our best seasons when we've had a world class keeper between the posts.

The Key word there is IF. It very rarely happens, and we can always get somebody in on emergency loan, like we did with Kasey Keller the last time it did happen. I just think there are better uses for the squad place and the wages than a player who stands a good chance of not even getting on the bench all season. Plus If Hoiveld got a long term injury and Fonte got suspended, then what the hell do we do at centre back?

I don't know.. I liked him in his brief Championship stint but he wasn't so good in the Championship and League 1 that you'd feel he can make it to the Prem. As a #4 CB I wouldn't mind but if he was our first backup I'd be worried, as he is right now...

Agree with you about CB. Just think we need a good strong back up for KD and younster we can bring through over a longer time-span. Not sure who we have at academy level. Atr the end of the day we are in Nigel's hands. He knows what we need.

Davis is a must pick. For the way we play he is essential. His distribution last season was phenomenal and he is a decent keeper.

We do need a solid 2nd choice however

Perhaps we really should take a look at Gillingham's Paulo Gazzaniga..?

I actually felt bad for forecast as a human being on Saturday but that was only short lived as I soon remembered he is rumored to be on 18-20K a week.....I would quite happily turn up now and again to SMS and be laughed at by the crowd for that sort of dosh!

I'm sorry, but I cannot believe Forecast is on anything near 18 grand a week.
