What facts have you produced there that are in any way relevant to him being a good keeper or not?

If you look through many match reports, it won't single out the goalkeeper unless they absolutely fluff it. A goalkeeper can still fail to save a shot that we expect them to save <doh>

Rob's reactions can be pathetic, and his agility isn't so good either... His punching is a concern and if he lets in the first shot, he has a horrible game afterwards.

To be honest, you can gather a lot of that from watching him training, never-mind in a match <ok>

My post asked a simple enough question, the point of which was to try to move the discussion to something more specific and objective than the use of emoticons and statements like "I think he's ****"/"Ithink he's not that bad".

I pointed out that the match reports do not seem to blame him for concedig goals. I asked what goals the "Elliott is ****" brigade hold him responsible for.

    Reasonable question isn't it ?

It is if people could be bothered to go back through all of our games and pinpoint the goals (and there have been goals he could have done a lot better with). Even though it wouldn't be the be all and end would it? Its the general feeling you get from watching a keeper between the sticks. Its a general feeling you get from how the players react when he is between the sticks. Its also about the number of cock ups he gets away with, full in the knowledge there is no such thing as a lucky goalkeeper so those things will bite you at some stage.

What you need to accept is that those of us that think he is sub standard at this level, do so based on what we have seen. We have pointed this out regularly in the aftermath of each match so its unlikely we're going to go through the whole season again and pick out those moments where we think he looks dodgy.

Personally he's just not for me. I think he is poor on crosses and incites panic as at WBA, and I think his shot stopping has been poor. If you could give Krul his distribution, you'd have a hell of a keeper.

    <wah><wah><wah> "use of emoticons" <wah><wah><wah>

Of course you have a problem with them...

I genuinely believe you're simply fighting the opposite corner because you're bored or think there should be some balance, because anybody who has watched him play would and is slating his ability (although not the lad himself, who clearly tries... it's not his fault he's not good enough).

Something to think about before work, look up the goals we conceded vs West Brom (1-1), Man City (0-4, especially Toure and Silva's goals... the third he probably couldn't do much about), Swansea's goal (0-1), Southampton (1st more so than second) and most of the goals conceded vs Liverpool are a pretty quick start to the Rob bashing <ok> (I used an emoticon, deal with it... <ok>... and another).

It's a case of one man's meat being another man's poison.

The forum is somewhere to discuss things and as a lot of people have different opinions there's bound to be times when there's a certain amount of disagreement.

If anybody sees something they don't like they can always ignore it.

I've got nothing against emoticons - - I was just asking for something specific, and Gandalf at least has pointed to some goals which he regards as Elliott's fault. Not sure i agree with all of them but that's fair enough

    Right:

    Last post on this subject.

I've looked at all the Tash match reports I could find for Elliot's games. The Tash ratings are:

    West Ham 7
    Liverpool No ratings given
    WBA 6
    Wigan 6
    Swanseas 3
    So'ton 7

A couple of pretty good games, a couple of mediocre games, one ****e game.

The point isn't that he either is or isn't a good keeper, or that we should or shouldn't want better. It's just that since the liverpool match, people seem to have become very extreme in their opinions.

Or at least that is my opinion.

To be fair I have been pretty consistent in my opinion since his debut against Forest. He was poor in that game and despite looking less fat at the start of this season, he just has never convinced me his general game has come on enough. Its a shame we had to ship out Forster but understandable. I will say I don't think its easy to get quality 2nd keepers. We were spolit by Harps. Generally teams tend to go for an experienced keeper as back up.

There is always an experienced czech/eastern block keeper who will do you a steady job!

I only rile up Freddd because I love angry sex <ok>

Loved doing the same erotic dance with Pouchy, until he started putting that weight on...

<laugh> Tash is our oracle like <laugh>

Depends how you rate it. Is it a general "for Rob" rating or harsher and more objective terms...

Either way, I don't think I actually expected anything more of him. He was a bargain basement signing who applies himself. He's not going to be knocking on the England door too soon, or become a first team regular in the premier league ever. He'll be a churny back-up for the rest of his days, but a well-paid one with beautiful hair.

I know I said that the last one was my last post, but I came across this in Garth Crooks team of the week (which, incidentally, I frequently think is filled with highly dubious selections)

    GOALKEEPER - ROB ELLIOT (Newcastle)
If Newcastle stay in the Premier League, which is by no means certain, then a single point and/or goal difference may make all the difference. The Magpies may well look back at the fixture against West Ham, where Rob Elliot had to be at his best to ensure a point at Upton Park. Newcastle's Premier League fate is now out of their own hands, but it might have been considerably worse if not for Elliot's performance.

Did you know? Elliot kept his first clean sheet in the Premier League against West Ham on Saturday, making three saves.

The fact that Garth thinks that our destiny is out of our hands (doesn't winning the next 2 do it for us Garth ?) undercuts his credibility a bit, but what the hell

Garth has no credibility. Most of his 'team of the week' selections are ridiculous. Often a 3-4-3 formation based on players who scored that week, even if their all round play wasn't good. He's been known to pick a side that has no central defenders, three natural full backs, four attacking midfielders ( eg Lamps, Cazorla, Hazard, Bale) plus three strikers. No formation, no 'team', just 11 players. Anyone can choose a weekly team based on a decent goalie and 10 goal scorers.
