Nigel Callaghan took over in goal against Arsenal after Tony Coton got sent off. He nearly saved the subsequent penalty, too. On another point I always find it interesting that Tony Coton never played for England but David James got heaps of caps.
Although he didn't do it for us, Henri Lansbury has played in goal when a keeper was sent off and there wasn't a sub available. Which of our current squad do you think would do that?
i'm sure Mariappa did that once...was it him? When Ben Foster was injured and we didn't have a sub GK....under AB...hmm...
This isn't strictly an answer to your question, but Henri Lansbury is making quite a name for himself in this role. (it would help if I read the entire thread before responding to someone )
Didn't Steve Palmer play in goal for about a minute, just so he would have worn all shirt numbers (pre-squad numbers) We have been blessed with some very good keepers, for me, especially Tony Coton and Kevin Miller. We have now who have great potential, so fingers crossed their names will be spoken with some of these others
He did indeed Kev. We were several goals up by then and in no danger. I seem to remember seeing an article somewhere about it
Oh ok, I thought it was the first minute, at kick off, and as soon as the ball went out, him and the actual Keeper just swapped shirts and he carried on out field....
It was - he had played in every position during the season except goalie - so he started between the sticks - we kicked off and kicked the ball out of play to change him for (was it Kevin Miller) so he became the first ever professional player to ever play in every position during the course of a season (and I think he stil is). He was a learned chap too - holdinga degree in Psychology.
He was probably frightened at the thought of one of his goalkicks hitting the crossbar at the other end and rebounding over his head.
