We had a goal line debate at the Brighton away fixture last season. It is rare, but during a full season across the English professional league you might be surprised at how often it does occur. We will see a sort of lazy reliance on the tech from the refs as shown by umpires in cricket for run outs. Often the tv replay is asked for automatically for fear of error. Glad this is happening. Football is the biggest sport on the planet and has been left behind on this issue
Goals are the defining moment in football, in the same way that wickets are in cricket. When people talk about interrupting the flow, I can see no reason not to allow the opposing team Captain one or perhaps two challenges a match, to a goal already awarded by the ref. it could be checked against crossing the line, and on the replay for a clear offside (not a debatable one) and in cases of obvious error, then the goal is disallowed. If its not clear, then the refs decision stands. Now this would make for some wonderfully tense moments, and I think would add to the match, as well as getting more decisions right. To those who say it would interrupt the the flow, not this way, it wouldn't. The ref has blown his whistle, play has already stopped, and we just have a slight pause before play resumes as the players walk to the centre circle. Oh, and the correct decision has been given.
But in that situation it doesn't make sense that you can challenge an awarded goal but not a disallowed goal.
Unless referee's start favouring the attacking side in all occassions, knowing that if they incorrectly award the goal then the technology will simply correct the situation.
Come on Pepys. I know we still have some doubting kickers and scratchers here, who don't want to change, but the decision is made. Let's stop living in the 19th century, skip the 20th and pass right on into the 21st, where all the other major sports are. The first they use it, you'll wonder where all that delay went..!
