So does anyone here listen to radio from around the globe, i.e. stations which aren't based in the UK?

My step-dad's got a good app on Windows 8 which lets you listen to radio stations from throughout the world, Japan to Malawi, USA to Russia, etc. It's good, I've taken to listening to Maebashi FM which is pretty good. Some of the Japanese music is really good, though it's not the stereotypical sound of J-Pop (indeed, one song sounded like it was from the 60s). Currently they seem to be having an Enya marathon.

I had some software on my old laptop which had a similar function but it was full spyware, which was a shame as it was really good and I had fun listening to Nile FM.

So, yes, what about you???

Not music, but WNYC's Radiolab is utterly brill, and you can get a podcast of it (I suggest you do), so that's some American radio that wouldn't be out of place among the best of radio 4's programming.
 
I like the film The Boat that Rocked, but that's as close as I get to listening to the radio in this country let alone any others. I vote for Pirate radio.

Sure, if you've found a particular awesome station. When I was in France listened to a French or Belgian station called Nostaligie or something and it's basically as you can guess fairly retro music but they played some amazing songs. I can't remember what exactly they played as it was back in August, but I know it was good.

Although I mainly mean when you've not been in the country of the station in question, so have listened online or whatever, but either way is fine.
 
would love to listen to 5live here in Colombia, but its unavailable due to copyright bollocks. The radio as well as the TV stations are generally crap here

I've listened to a few transmissions on my computer from (I think) NPR which broadcasts concerts from the likes of Newport Jazz Festival. I sometimes listen to this on my computer.

Several years ago I went on holiday to France in the car and listened to some of the footbsll commentary on Radio 5. I also checked out a French jazz programme which was broadcasting an interview with saxophonist Tim Berne at about 4pm. Anyone who is familiar with his music will be aware that his approach is pretty uncompromising and I was staggered that it was consigned to the graveyard shift as would be the case in the UK. Not the best of interview subjects as he is always non-commital when questioned and the poor French interviewer was really having to struggle.


Several times I've watched live football in France and been shocked that they used to get a cartoonist to draw a sketch just before the action started to get exciting. I'm amazed that this distraction was ever suggested.

I've got the tune in app on my phone, St Brendy recommended it to me for listening to cricket, but you can listen to radio from all over the globe. I was listening to Radio St Helena the other day.

I've discovered that it was used to broadcast Marxist/Leninist propaganda during the Cold War. Were you in Albania during the Cold War? If so, why?
 
To answer your question PL, I have listened to many radio stations in several countries. Probably the most remote was listening to an Australian local station announcing that it was exactly 10 o'clock in that part of Aussie, which made it exactly midnight of December 31st 1991 and a New Year. But I was on Haast Beach in NZ, in a Suzuki Super Carry Camper with my wife gently zzzing next to me. She wasn't big on New Year celebrations. I think we were the only people there. Of course, I've have heard the BBC World Service in just about every country I tried to receive it in. It always sounds better the further away from home one is.

Funnily enough, I just spent last weekend in Brighton, and there they have an illegal radio relay transmitter, broadcasting an excellent French radio station called FiP [France inter Paris]. Every now and then they close down the transmitter and another automatically takes over. I think the authorities have given up trying. An Internet Only station I can recommend is Radio Paradise from Los Angeles. FiP is also available via the Internet.
