Taken from the sky sports website: Shay Given has admitted he is ready to quit international football after Euro 2012. Given is Republic of Ireland's most capped player with 124 caps to date, but he has now confirmed that Monday's game with Italy will likely be his last. The Aston Villa keeper has come in for some criticism for his performances in Poland, with Ireland already out before their final group game. "I think it might be time to step aside and let somebody else come into the side," he said. "It's all a bit raw at the moment because we've lost an important game but at some point I'm going to have to make a decision." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hopefully he has just said it in the heat of the moment after two poor games. We really do not have a ready made replacement for Shay who has been possibly our most important player over the last decade. Please don't do it Shay!
Id love if we could get a win on Monday, would be a nice send-off for Given... what a player he's been for us, legend!
Given has been shocking for many months, he needs to look at his fitness and his ability and retirement must be the answer.
I don't really see why anyone would retire from International football. Jack Charlton told Ray Hougton. "I'll tell you when you are retired".
I think he's from Donegal Pat not Stepaside Whatever he decides he has been a great 'keeper, a great servant to Irish soccer and should be supported regardless.
Looks like erm Trappatoni has put the boot into that one. He told Given to stay retires more or less.
